Maglocks are electromagnetic locks that require constant addition power supply to operate, without which the magnets do not work. Maglocks are commonly placed in top outer corners of door frames. It also has an armature plate positioned at the top corner of the door to allow magnetic connection between the maglock and the plate when the door closes. Energizing the electromagnet inside the lock will cause current to flow through it, attracting the armature plate with a strong force so that the door locks properly in place.

Maglocks are made in two types: fail-safe and fail-secure. For fail-safe, safety is top priority as it de-energizes and releases the armature plate, so that there is free access through the door when power is lost. Fail-secure takes security as its top priority by attracting the armature plate when power is lost, ensuring the door is magnetically locked. These locks might seem good and stylish, but they have very heavy disadvantages attached to using them.

Thanks to the need for constant additional power supply, maglocks can make your home easily accessible to any intruder when there is no power supply.Battery backups can be used as additional power supply when you have maglocks as the only security in your home, but these batteries have to be checked and replaced as often as possible. Also these batteries will run out when power goes out for a long period of time, say two days or more.

If you want to use maglocks for security in your home, there are codes you must comply with. The Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) in your locality must give you the permission to install maglocks, and you will provide he/she with electrical plans and permits. Maglocks are best used in correctional facilities and detention centres, or in places where free departure is restricted.

One more downside of using fail-secure maglocks to secure your business’ door is that the door can become tough to unlock if you lock the maglock for a long time continuously. The lock can also attract everyday metal items since it is just a magnet.Fail-safe maglocks are more common than fail-secure. However, since they require constant supply of power to remain locked, they are more expensive to keep.

You need to look at what you want really before you can make the decision to install maglocks in your house. In places where free departure is limited, maglocks are very appropriate. If you find yourself getting stressed over the code compliancy and mechanics to get it to work, then it is probably better to look for another security system.
