An Introduction To The Electronic Universal Testing Machine

The Universal Testing Machine is a fast, accurate and inexpensive machine specially designed to test the material. It is used for testing a range of metallic and non-metallic materials for tension, bending, compression, cycle test, etc. It is extensively used for the testing of plastics, ropes, cords, wires, elastomers, foam materials, wires, cords, etc. Moreover, it is also used to perform the strength, compression and tensile strength of the finished parts.

The universal testing machine is used for performing the following tests:

  • The Universal Testing Machine has three basic units namely loading frame, hydraulic pumping system and electronic control panel. So, let us look at them in detail below:

  • Loading Frame: It comprises of a central cross head and lower table. A geared motor is used to adjust the center cross head for further clearances. The compression test takes place between lower table and central cross head while the tension test is performed between upper and central cross heads. This unit has six pillars that offer it complete stability. Rotary encoder is used to measure the movement of the lower table ram stroke while the load sensing is done through a strain gauge transducer. The standard safety factors include over travel of ram, over travel limit of center cross head and over range of load.
  • Hydraulic Pumping System: It comprises of a multi-plunger pump that is powered by a motor. The maximum circuit bar for it is about 210 bars. The pump is used to provide a continuous non-pulsating oil flow to the loading frame’s ram. Also, a pressure switch is provided for additional safety against overload situation. The load control valve and release valve is placed at a convenient position to allow easy operation by the operator. The electrical panel is used for the movement of cross-head and main pump. The fast lifting of the ram for initial gap filing is done with the help of an additional switch. The rotary encoder fixed along the ram is used to indicate the ram movement. The sensor output is fed to digital indicator for display and processing.
  • Electronic Control Panel- It comprises of a microprocessor based digital display system. It also has RS232, to communicate with the computer. The whole system is supported through window based software. The monitor displays the online graph of displacement vs the load. Moreover, one can also retrieve the graphical representation and analogue readings stored in the file.
