Most stylish fashion lover at Ladies Day
Posted: Dec 05, 2014
They all dressed to impress but there was one fashionista who outshone the rest on Ladies Day.
Modelling their most stylish outfits at Newcastle Racecourse at the weekend, young and old made sure the judges in the Best Dressed Lady competition were hard pushed to pick a winner for the return of Ladies Day.
But in the end it was mum-of-one Nicola Payne who scooped the top prize in her black and gold vintage style dress.
The Gosforth Park racecourse ran the glamorous competition at the Collingwood Insurance Beeswing Ladies Day on Saturday, July 26, and judges from Tyne Tees models had the difficult task of identifying the most well turned-out ladies from crowds of over 20,000 on the day.
After narrowing down the field to ten ladies who’d donned the most show-stopping outfits and had been preened to perfection, judges eventually chose 42 year-old Nicola, a dental nurse and practice manager from Berwick-upon-Tweed in Northumberland.
Her dress from US online retailer Bettie Page Clothing coupled with a bespoke matching fascinator from Kelso based milliner Karen Reid was deemed to be the standout choice.
Nicola, mum to a five year-old son who attended the raceday as part of a group of 16 ladies and gents, said: "I first attended Ladies Day two years ago to mark my 40th birthday and I’ve been banging the drum for the raceday ever since as it’s a unique opportunity to dress up and get together with friends.

Best Dressed Lady contest. 42 year-old Nicola Payne a dental nurse and practice manager from Berwick-upon-Tweed took away the title and a top prize package
"I was speechless to be shortlisted in the Best Dressed lady contest, let alone to win. I usually go for fitted dresses but this year I wanted something different and after watching TV shows set in the 1940s and 50s I decided I’d like to go for something vintage inspired.
"My friends had overheard a rehearsal for the Best Dressed winner and I wasn’t included so they had all disappeared when the actual announcement was made, but needless to say we soon made up for it in the celebrations. The prizes are fantastic and I’m most looking forward to enjoying a romantic weekend away with my partner Gary."
Nicola scooped a top prize package including £500 of cruise vouchers courtesy of sponsors Collingwood Insurance, a dress from Celeb Boutique, an overnight stay at Horton Grange Country House Hotel and a VIP package for six people at Tiger Tiger.
David Williamson, executive director at Newcastle Racecourse, said the raceday was a huge success and the Best Dressed Lady competition as fiercely contested as ever.
He said: "Ladies Day at Newcastle Racecourse has long been recognised as one of the biggest and most glamorous days out in the region’s social calendar and this year was no exception. The glorious weather was certainly on our side as we welcomed well over 20,000 well-turned out ladies and gents through the gates.
"Once again judges for the Best Dressed contest had an incredibly tough job on their hands as ladies, and gents alike, went all out in the fashion stakes. Nicola Payne was a really worthy winner and I hope she enjoys her fantastic prize package which continues to be a huge draw on the day thanks to a fantastic line up of partners and sponsors."
