When accurate machining of critical but brittle components is required, Diamond Turning Tools provide the appropriate solution. Diamond tools, particularly, refer to the use of tool bits with either single piece or a clutch of diamonds providing the cutting edge. Turning machines have been in use for over a decade now, but their technology, in terms of the lathes, is used for turning into computer numerically controlled (CNC) machines. T tool bits have also gone through lots of changes to what they are today, on the cutting edge of technology, well, literally so.

Used, Where Accuracy is Critical

The need for accuracy to nano levels of measurement has also been one of the reasons for seeking more effective turning tools. Industries such as watch components camera components and other areas of manufacture like automobiles where accuracy of components is critical, find the use of diamond tools.

The list of base materials, on which diamond tools are used, is quite long; aluminium, copper, bronze, lead, gold and silver and so on. There are several more such metals and alloys on which diamond tools perform very well. In reality, there are only a few exceptions where these tools are not used.

In terms of the cost factor, there are indeed a few materials, where if the diamond tools are used for machining or turning, the wear and tear of the diamond bit is faster, thereby increasing the cost. In most other situations, the cost of the turning process, with the use of diamond tools, has been lowered to a great extent, due to technological innovations.

The machines using the diamond tools have also undergone many changes. In most cases, the part being turned is in a fixed position on the machine and the tool is rotating.

Benefits of Turning with Diamond Tools

The following can be listed as distinct advantages of Diamond Turning

  • One can obtain great optical surfaces, right until the edge, without having to polish.

  • Soft ductile materials, where polishing is dif?cult, are easier to work on.

  • While working on unusual shapes and off-axis parabolas, there is no better alternative.

  • There is a substantial cost advantage over the traditional polishing; this is specifically true in situations where the optical and mounting surfaces pose a challenge.

In the traditional polishing methods, the force applied used to be the most critical factor in obtaining the optical surface desired. The force had to be manually controlled in specific areas of the surface to remove more material while turning. While using Diamond Turning Tools, however, such issues are not involved since there is uniform displacement and very accurate results.
