5 Landscaping Tips That Add Beauty and Texture to a Dull Yard

Is your lawn space going to waste? An empty one looks and feel depressing, doesn’t it? You can transform it into a comfortable retreat and attractive space for yourself and your family just by following a few simple landscaping tips. Besides obvious beautification techniques, the first thing you need to do is to rejuvenate your lawn so it can be used as a fitting canvas for your lawn design.

Here are some tips that can help you do that:

1. Water the Lawn Infrequently

With climate change a very real threat, you won’t have to force yourself to follow this tip. Your lawn may look parched, but it really doesn’t need a lot of water to survive and thrive. Just program your sprinklers to turn on a couple of times a week and no more than that.

However, make sure that the lawn is watered deeply each time so that it can get to the roots. If you don’t do this, the roots will grow deeper and your grass will not turn as green as you need it to. A good rule of thumb is to water the grass with an inch of water at least once a week. Of course, this will depend on the weather, grass species, and the condition of the soil.

There is a simple method you can use to determine how much water you are using up. Just place some containers around the yard. When the sprinklers turn on, they will start to fill up and when the level of the water reaches an inch, turn them off. Most of the containers should have this much water before the sprinklers are turned off.

2. Consider Grass Cycling

If you throw away your grass clippings after mowing the lawn, stop! You can use them to rejuvenate your lawn via a process called grass cycling and it takes little to no effort. All you need to do is to leave your grass clippings on the lawn after you are done mowing it.

The cut clippings will decompose and act as natural fertilizers for your newly-mowed lawn. All of the nutrients will seep into the soil and encourage new, vibrant grass to grow. The clippings will also act as mulch and retain water when you turn the sprinklers on.

In other words, with grass cycling, you can recycle clippings and ensure your lawn looks better than ever. It will also save you time because you won’t have to add extra mulch to improve soil quality.

3. Add colour with Flower Pots

Your lawn looks boring because it lacks colour and texture. Besides ensuring that the grass is green, healthy, and verdant, consider adding flowering potted plants along the edges. This will add attractive pops of colour that will act as a frame for your yard.

To make the area really interesting, match the colours of the flowers with the seasons. For example, plant white and pink flowers in the pots in spring and replace them with reds and yellows during fall.

4. Avoid Clutter

This may be difficult to follow if you have a small yard and a green thumb to boot. A cluttered space will not be accessible, which will defeat the entire purpose of your landscaping project. The aforementioned potted plants will help, but only if you spread them out across the lawn.

If you want more greenery, consider moving some plants into your home. Ferns, for example, can withstand low light conditions, and they don’t take up a lot of space either. You can even mount them outside on the walls to free up space and make it look attractive at the same time. Consider erecting a lattice fence which you can use to mount the plants in.

5. Add Lights

Gorgeous landscaping should not be hidden at night. Once you are done implementing your design, make sure it can be seen when the sun goes down by adding lamps. Besides illuminating your beautiful lawn, these can add another interesting element.

You don’t need to place them in a straight line or get the same ones either. Mix and match the types you get and place them in intervals to break up lines. This will add texture to the lawn and prevent it from looking too sterile.

The only limits to landscape design are those that are set by your imagination. However, if you are not an experienced landscaper, you should not hesitate to hire professionals.
