Laparoscopic is considered one of the most specialized techniques for the diagnosis of abdominal diseases and has minimally invasive as compared to surgery. If we take a look at some 4-5 years back, the laparoscopic technique was commonly used for gynecologic surgery and even gall bladder surgery as well. Over the last 10 years, the Laparoscopic technique has expanded into intestinal surgery as well as abdominal surgery. If we take a look at the traditional open surgeries in which the surgeon uses a single incision to enter into the abdomen which proved to be painful and risky in most of the cases. In Laparoscopic surgery, surgeons use a laparoscope which has a thin tube, to which a camera is attached which delivers a clear picture to the video device. Due to this surgeons can see and diagnose the disease effectively. In this type of surgery, several 0.5-1cm incisions are used. If we take a look at the beginning of the procedure then, the abdomen is inflated with carbon dioxide gas which helps in providing a working and viewing space for the surgeon. Then the laparoscope transmits images from the abdominal cavity to high-resolution video monitors due to which surgeons can easily see-through. With the help of these live images from the abdomen, the surgeons can perform the same operations as traditional surgery but with smaller incisions.

In some rare cases, a surgeon may choose to use a special type of inlet which is large enough to insert the surgeon's hand. In medical terms, this type of surgery is called "hand assisted" laparoscopy. The incision required for the hand port is larger than the other laparoscopic incisions but is usually smaller than the incision required for traditional surgery.

If we talk about some of the major advantages of laparoscopic surgery as compared to the conventional surgery then, patients often experience less pain and can have a speedy and shorter recovery.

Laparoscopic surgery can be used to handle most of the abdominal and intestinal surgeries which may include Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis, cancer, rectal prolapse, and severe constipation. In the past, there had been severe concern regarding the safety and risk factor of laparoscopic surgery for cancer-related operations (mainly including tumors). Recently due to advancements in medical sciences, several patients are eyewitnesses that laparoscopic surgery is safe for certain colorectal cancers and liver-related diseases.

If we compare traditional open surgery and that too with Laparoscopic surgery then it’s pretty obvious that laparoscopic surgery is the safest amongst all. At the beginning of a laparoscopic operation, a laparoscope is inserted through a small incision near the belly button and this helps the surgeon to initially inspect the condition that determines whether laparoscopic surgery is safe to perform or not.

Even the Laparoscopic surgeries have some risks associated with it, but the risk of any operation is determined by the fact that at which part it is performed and the complications related to it. So it is highly advisable to seek medical attention before jumping to the final decision.
