Biologics or Biological Therapy

Biologics or Biological Therapy is the use of living organisms or substances to treat diseases. These substances may occur in the human body such as stem cells or may be created in the laboratory. Biological therapy includes vaccines, drugs, and antitoxins that are synthesized from living organisms. The use of biologics for cancer has become quite prevalent where it works in a different manner. For instance, some biological therapies suppress or stimulate the immune system to help the body fight cancerous tissues. Other biologic therapies attack particular cancer cells, in order to prevent them from growing or kill them. In some cases, they also attenuate the side effects of some cancer treatments. Biological TherapyThe primary notion of biological therapy is to boost the immune system to recognize and eradicate cancer cells. For instance, the human body’s immune system can identify foreign substances such as germs throughout the body. In a similar fashion, the immune system should recognize cancer cells although it doesn’t in many cases. This is due to the ability of cancer cells to hide from immune system cells.

In some cases, cancer cells can inhibit or weaken the ability of immune system cells from acting. Scientists have synthesized a biological agent named monoclonal antibody, which has been found effective in cancer treatment. Monoclonal antibodies (mAb) are derived from identical immune cells that are clones of a unique parent cell. In monoclonal antibody therapy, mAbs are used to stimulate the patient’s immune system to attack cancer cells.

Furthermore, checkpoint inhibitor therapy is a type of cancer immunotherapy, in which it targets immune checkpoints. In other words, checkpoint therapy can prevent inhibitory checkpoints, thereby restoring immune system function. Biologics for cancer is a relatively newer treatment and is still under investigation. However, it is less invasive than other conventional treatment options such as radiotherapy and surgery. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), there are certain side effects associated with biological therapy that vary with each therapy. There are different types of biological therapies available such as Adoptive cell transfer, Targeted drug therapy, Cancer vaccines, Monoclonal antibodies, Angiogenesis inhibitors, Monoclonal antibodies, Immune checkpoint modulators, Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy, Gene therapy, Biochemotherapy, and more signals the cancer cells send to suppress the immune system.

Types of Biological Therapy:
  • Adoptive cell transfer
  • Angiogenesis inhibitors
  • Bacillus Calmette-Guerin therapy
  • Biochemotherapy
  • Cancer vaccines
  • Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy
  • Cytokine therapy
  • Gene therapy
  • Immune checkpoint modulators
  • Immunoconjugates
  • Monoclonal antibodies
  • Oncolytic virus therapy
Targeted drug therapy in general, biological therapies work by:1. Inducing the system to attack cancer cells.

There are several ways biological therapy treatments can do this goal. As an example, chemicals that stimulate your system cells might be injected into your body or a sample of your system cells might be trained during a lab to attack cancer cells before being reintroduced to your body.

2. Making cancer cells easier for your system to acknowledge.

Biological therapy also can target the cancer cells, turning on or off cell signals that help them elude the system cells. As an example, drugs called immune checkpoint inhibitors can target specific chemical receptors on cancer cells, blocking the signals the cancer cells send to suppress the system.
