Precaution to Be Followed In Scaffolding Work
Posted: Aug 05, 2014
Working with scaffolding is lot easier and safer than working with a ladder. It is more stable, provides a wider work platform, has longer reach and saves time. Scaffolds can be purchased or taken on rent according to the budget considerations. To ensure the safety of workers, some precautions are imperative as discussed below.
Erecting a Scaffold
Once a good part of scaffold is completed, install a platform so that the overhead planks can be installed from there. Create edge protection by installing an outer frame around the uprights. Leave a section open of the currently installed platform for movement and passing of the material. Fittings and connectors of the scaffold must be carefully tightened. Overloading of the scaffold with material or workers should be avoided. Workers must not climb on the edge protection to gain extra height as it may disorient the scaffold.
Scaffold Alteration
Any alteration to the scaffold must be made by an experienced person in accordance with the scaffolding plan. These alterations should not weaken the structure of the scaffold. Regular inspection must be done to check the effect of alteration on the structure.
Safeguards against falling objects
For preventing fatal injuries caused by falling or falling of the objects, appropriate safeguards must be in place. Catch platforms (fall arresting platforms) should be used to ensure that falling objects do not cause injuries. Perimeter screening and exclusion zones can also be helpful in preventing injuries. Workers must exercise caution while working in windy or rainy conditions. If the slope of the working surface is less than the 26 degree then a fall arresting platform can be installed at height of 1 meter or less below it. In case slope is more than 26 degree, then the fall arresting platform must be installed at a height of 300 mm or less.
Working in the vicinity of electricity or heavy traffic
Working around electric installations can be dangerous and in some cases life threatening too. Overhead and underground electrical power sources must be dealt with utmost care. Loose wires may cause electric shock and electrocution. Regular inspection must be done to ensure that the power sources do not interfere anyway with the working area. Working around electrical installations must be avoided during wet and damp conditions.
Safety of the workers and scaffold structure may not be compromised while working near heavy traffic or heavy construction vehicles. To direct the vehicles away from the working area use of neon signs, barricades, concrete structures etc. can be helpful.
Dismantling of Scaffold
While dismantling a scaffold, the platform just below the level, where the worker is standing must have a full platform and should not be lower than 2 meters so as to prevent any serious injuries.
A number of safety precautions must be followed while doing scaffolding work. From the time of erecting a scaffold to the time of dismantling, many safety measures are needed to be followed to ensure safety of the workers.
