Seizure can be terrifying for someone who hasn’t experienced it before. But with knowledge about this disease, you can help yourself and someone experiencing the same. Most seizures stop after a while, but some don’t. If you see someone having a seizure for long than five minutes, it is best to call help.
People who have seizure carry pens and medication for seizure like levipil. Once they seizure, you can help them take the medicine or whatever they need. For a person, experiencing this for the first time, it can be a challenge, especially if they or people near them know nothing about this.
In this blog, we will see some tips that can help you take care of a person having a seizure. Before we do that, let’s learn the type of seizures.
Focal onset seizures: In this, it starts in one part of your brain. A person with this type of seizure, the person’s arm will start to move or face will start to twitch. The patient may zone out or stare at one place, and is aware and awake, but cannot control anything. The patient may forget about the episode soon after.
Generalized seizures: In this, multiple areas of your brain are involved. People don’t know what is happening to them and are frightening. It needs urgent medical attention.
Here’s how you can take care of someone who is having a seizure
Have a first-aid kit
If your friend or someone in the family has a problem with seizures, it is best to have a first-aid kit with you. Keep medicine, pens, and so on.
Rest all you need to worry about taking precautions when someone has seizures.
Don’t let people crowd the patient
It is best to keep people away from the patient. Don’t let people crowd the patient, and give her/him space and breathing ground. If everyone surrounds her, it can lead to more problems when the patient wakes up.
Don’t put anything in the patient’s mouth
It is a myth that a person experiencing a seizure will bite her/his tongue. But it is best to not put anything in the patient’s mouth as they might bite you or harm their mouth or teeth due to the object.
Don’t place her on her back
When a person suffers from seizure, it is best to place them on their side instead of their back. It will help them keep their airways clear and stray away from serious problems.
Time the length of the seizure
It is best to time the length of the patient’s seizure. If it stops within 2 minutes there is no cause for concern. But if the seizure lasts for more than five minutes it is best to call medical help.
Don’t stop her/his movements
It is best to not stop the patient from moving her/his legs and arms. If you do, it can hurt you and the patient.
