Anantapur stands mutely, on the main road (now the National Highway) between Hyderabad, Telangana State, and Bengaluru, a relic from the glorious past of Medieval India. Originally called "Hande Anantapuram", it served as a seat of the great Vijaynagara Kingdom that once stretched across Central India like a massive belt. Anantapur History is not only important for students of the history of Andhra Pradesh, but for the whole of India, as it was the last Great Hindu Kingdom to dominate the country, and leave a lasting legacy for the people.

Endless City of the Hande

There is controversy about the name. "Hande" simply means "Chief of the Vijayanagara Rule". But "Ananta" is taken by some to be from the name Ananda, wife of the Builder of Anantapur, who was the Diwan of the Hindu Kingdom of Vijayanagara. Others have claimed the name is derived from "Anantasagaram", which is the name of a vast water tank nearby, and which means "Endless Ocean". Still, others contend that the name must have come from Anantarasa Chikkavodaya himself, who built the City. He was the Minister of Bukka-I, Ruler of Vijayanagara. Also known as "Anantapuramu", it was once a part of the prosperous kingdom. Its importance is shown by the number of Forts surrounding the City and elaborates fortifications of the Main City itself. The Penukonda Fort, The Ravadurg Gooty Fort, and the Rayadurg Fort are all sites of historical significance which indicate the importance of this ancient city. The Anantapur District was formed in the year 1882, having been separated from the Bellary District. Anantapur, along with a number of adjoining districts, was presented by the then Ruler of the Vijayanagara Empire, to the Hande Leader, Hanumanappa Naidu, to cement their friendship, and in recognition of the conquests by the Hande family on behalf of the Kingdom.

As time passed, the region passed into the control of the Qutub Shahis and then merged into the Mughal Empire. After this, Anantapur passed into the holdings of the Nawabs of Cuddapah. The East India Company took over the reins on behalf of Great Britain. And then the Royalty of Great Britain annexed the region.

Continuous City

Through it all, the Hande family continued in charge. Finally set free on the 15th August 1947, Anantapur continues to flourish as it always has, through the generations of history. And strangely enough, the Handes continued to represent the District and City of Anantapur, this time as political leaders of the region. This time of course, their leadership was fully dependent on the will of the people. But they were still loved. The contribution of this one family, to the Cultural and Artistic Life of the City, has been nothing less than extraordinary. There is an emotional bond between the City and this most unusual family that seems destined to last until the City itself lasts. Anantapur is indeed the "Endless" City (Ananta Pur). Anantapur History will continue as long as the people who created and lived in it find shelter in the Holy City.
