As per the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 in Australia, disability has been defined as either partial loss or complete loss of physical and mental functions in a human being. As per recent data available, about 20% of the Australian population is disabled. Disability is not a curse; it is an impairment of the body or the brain of the human being that does not permit him or her to properly carry out all their day-to-day activities. It could be related to their physical and hygiene care, or could be meeting their emotional and mental challenges. Disabled people need to face different kinds of challenges in their daily lives – from being unaccepted by the society to facing issues with career advancement, there are numerous issues that require more compassion and empathy than probably anything else.

Disability support services are designed and curated to help the disabled to ably meet such challenges and tests of time. While there are many schemes announced by the Government related to disability and the cause of disabled people, there are many private service providers who work around providing assistance and support to the disabled at their homes and personal spaces to enhance their way of life.

Some of the disability support services that such organizations provide include:

  • Providing trained NDIS disability support worker
  • Supporting the disabled with the routine functions at home
  • Interacting and communicating with the disabled to keep him/her mentally active and occupied.
  • Assist with basic housekeeping and household tasks.
  • Take care of their medical and non-medical needs on a daily basis
  • Take care of their leisure activities so that the disabled person is productively engaged
  • Provide support and assistance with the travel needs of the disabled person.
  • Provide customized and personalized services that are totally focussed on helping the disabled person live a quality day-to-day life.
  • Planning and managing the entire schedule for the disabled with the objective to enhance their physical and mental aptitude.

When looking for a service provider for disability support services in Australia, it is advisable to look for organizations that are approved and registered with NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme of Australia). Such organizations will ensure that the care provider for a disabled one at home will be a thoroughly trained NDIS disability support worker. The registration is a proof of their professional standards and competency. Handling disabled people demands that the worker is trained and qualified to do the job.

The other aspect that definitely needs to be stressed upon when searching for disability support services is about the service provider’s flexibility in offering customized care plans for their clients. It would be a good idea to speak to the support workers being assigned the job. Two qualities that support workers certainly need to have in order to deal well with disabled people are compassion and patience. It is recommended that family members undertake extensive research on finding out about the reputation and credibility of the service provider well before signing the contract.
