What is OET 2020?

Occupational English Test is international language proficiency test for healthcare professionals who are seeking to pursue their career in native English speaking countries. Oet tests healthcare professionals in all four skills- reading, writing, speaking and listening English language.

Who can take Occupational English Test?

OET is test for healthcare aspirants who belong to the 12 major following professions

Dietetics

Dentistry

Medicine

Optometry

Nursing

Occupational Therapy

Radiography

Podiatry

Pharmacy

Physiotherapy

Speech Pathology

Veterinary

If you belong to any of the above mentioned professions and planning to pursue masters in abroad, then this test is for you.

What is in this test?

Just like IELTS, OET is also an assessment of your English to be able to survive and communicate in the English environment. Basically, Occupational English Test is set for the healthcare background students and it is to test candidate’s speaking, listening, reading and writing skills.

  1. OET Listening: Occupational English Test listening part will have approximately 40 minutes and 42 question items. This part of the test will be generic and accessible for all healthcare candidates. Listening test is designed to assess candidate’s ability to identify specific information and speaker’s purpose.
  2. OET Reading: Occupational English Test reading sub-test consists of three parts with 42 questions. Aspirants need to finish the test within 60 minutes.

Part A consists of expeditious reading task for 15 minutes. You must answer 20 questions related to matching, sentence completion and short answer questions.

Part B and Part C is for 45 minutes and consists of careful reading task. Part B is to test your ability to mark the detail or main point of 6 short texts from the healthcare work area. Each text consists of 100 to 150 words. Part C in the reading test is to assess you skill of identifying detailed meaning in two passages of 800 words each. This section consists of 8 multiple choice questions.

  1. OET Writing: The writing test is a 45 minutes OET test with a structure that usually examine your ability to write a letter to advice or prescribe a patient in pharmacy, veterinary and occupational therapy. The task is different for each profession based upon the situation and demand of each profession- a nursing aspirant will have a task related to nurse, a physiotherapist will have task related to physiotherapy situation.
  2. OET Speaking: Speaking test in OET takes 20 minutes to complete. Occupational English Speaking test uses materials designed for each individual profession. You need to choose your professional role in role play. For example, if you are dentist, you will play dentist role play and the interlocutor will play a patient or client’s role.

Occupational English Test is used as English language proficiency in following countries

In United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, Namibia, Singapore and Dubai OET is accepted from the above mentioned 12 healthcare practitioners.

In Australia and New Zealand, you may require additional test, Skilled Migrant Category for visa immigration.
