Since the beginning of civilization, architecture has been one of the most significant defining forces of human history. In fact, every time period has had its own distinctive architecture, that reflects key social and cultural aspects of that era. The various architectural colleges greatly rely on past design methodologies to inspire their students and help them forge new tools to create new trends for the future. Now, with the beginning of the new decade, discussed below are emerging architectural trends that are likely to define the shape and style of various structures over the next ten years.

Green Building Design

The need to conserve the environment has ensured that architects are increasingly focusing on sustainability. This means that the structures of the future will see a significant increase in the use of recycled materials, energy-efficient design features that rely on the use of natural lighting, and water-saving plumbing systems for better resource management. Another trend that is becoming increasingly popular is the integration of live fauna within the interior and exterior of various structures in the form of vertical gardens.

Revival Of Art Deco

The trend of slick glass facades and shiny reflective exteriors are likely to give way to the more aesthetically appealing tradition of art deco over the next ten years. In fact, a majority of current architectural projects are already implementing a combination of straight lines and bold, multilayered accoutrements of art deco. In addition, the use of geometrical patterns, brass fixtures, and detailed ornamentation have once again risen in demand for designing the interiors of both commercial and residential structures.

Increasingly Fluid And Dynamic Designs

In recent times, architects have been experimenting with flowing designs that are not bound by sharply-defined shapes and angles. This trend is expected to continue growing in the coming decade, leading to the creation of more dynamic structures. This trend has been largely inspired by nature, which rarely features geometrically precise shapes. It is believed that such designs aim to establish closer connectivity between human development and elements of nature.

Higher Resistance To Natural Disasters

Another important aspect that architects are focusing on is that of developing structures that provide greater protection from natural disasters. For this, architects are using a combination of innovative design and time-tested construction techniques for higher resistance to damage from such disasters. They are working towards creating structural solutions that can withstand the most extreme forces of nature and also provide economical space solutions for both residential and commercial use.

Greater Focus On Space Efficiency

Space efficiency is emerging as the latest buzzword in architectural trends for the next decade. Architects are expected to provide design solutions that make constructed spaces both flexible and multifunctional. This means that the buildings of the future are expected to be true to their purpose besides being capable of serving different objectives. Hence, it would be normal to have buildings that have spaces to be used as an office during the daytime and a residence at night.

Restoration Of Vibrant Colors And Patterns

One of the key aspects of the plate-glass era of architecture was the extensive use of neutral colours and patterns. But now, this trend is fading away with the growing demand for vibrant colours and patterns. In fact, private universities offering architectural courses are already training their students in using this trend most effectively to create a truly awe-inspiring design. Living walls, neon signs, and elaborate lighting features are just some ways of incorporating this trend.
