How Climbing Tree Stands Work

First, tree stands are tools for hunters that allow them to hunt from a higher vantage the point, lodged against a tree trunk. Tree stands offer extra coverage and keep the hunter out of the line of sight of deer and other game animals. Tree stands are platforms that can be either open or enclosed and which are secured to a tree’s truck in order to get the hunter off the ground and give him (or her) a better viewpoint.

Specifically, climbing tree stands, also called climber tree stands, allow the hunter to climb with the tree stand to the point on the tree from which he wishes to hunt. He can carry the stand-in with him in the morning and be in a tree by daybreak, because there’s no real advance set up required, other than a thorough safety check of the parts of the tree stand.

Parts of a Climbing Tree Stand

Climbing tree stands are made up of two parts, a platform and a set. The two parts are usually connected by a strap to keep the two parts together if for some reason the platform fails under the weight of the hunter, stranding the hunter in the tree.

With a climbing tree stand, chosen trees need to be relatively free of limbs that might be in the way. Small hacksaw knives work to trim up very small limbs and branches, but otherwise, climbing tree stands don’t work with bushy trees.

There’s either a metal or cable strap that circles around the tree and connects to the stand with bolts or pins, making it possible to adjust the size to work with different tree widths. Once you’re up in the tree, many hunters believe it’s a good idea to replace the pin with a lock for safety.

At the bottom of the tree, the hunter adjusts the climbing tree stand so that they will be level once they’re up in the tree. The climbing starts when the hunter angles the upper part (the seat) and raises it up the length of the tree, then levels it out against the tree, wedging it into place. The lower part is raised with the hunter’s legs in much the same fashion. This continues until the hunter is at the height from which he prefers to hunt.

Specific Safety Issues

This tree stands can be especially dangerous if you don’t keep safety uppermost in your mind. I have a family member who fell from the best climbing tree stand when the pin came loose and he lost his footing. He became trapped, hanging head down, about 10 feet off the ground because the strap tangled around his ankles. He survived with some very nasty injuries, but this is an example of why you should always, always wear a high-quality safety harness when you’re hunting from any kind of tree stand. Pins can break or come loose.

I took most of these photos the very evening of the accident before we collected the items for him. As you can see, he wasn’t able to collect them for himself… He escaped further injury and possibly death only because his bootlaces were loose and he was finally able to pull his feet free.

So there you have our list of the most affordable climbing tree stands available today. The best value for you is going to be the tree-stand that meets your specific hunting needs but does it at a price you can reasonably afford. Safe Hunting!
