Tourism is a major economic sector for most countries in the world today. However, the degree at which a country depends on tourism varies from state to state. One of the countries that largely depend on tourism is France. In this essay, we shall discuss how France rose to gain global recognition and how the country benefits from the vast industry for economic development.

As the world’s leading tourist destination, France receives about 83 million tourists from various countries around the globe. France has held this position for years and remains a leader because of what it is ready to offer to the international market. It is a dynamic sector and through the effort of new and emerging clientele, France has transformed its tourism sector into something admirable. There is need for this transformation because of the new clients arriving from all over the world. Asians and Europeans account for the highest number of tourists visiting France. German has the leading number of nationals going to France, followed by Britain. Even though France, like other leading economies in the world felt the economic meltdown, the industry steadily recovered. Today, tourists from countries such as Greece, Ireland, and Portugal, which were first hit by the crisis have recovered and sending tourists to France. Moreover, China tops on the list of Asian countries that send tourists to France, with an approximated 1.5 million Chinese touring France annually. In recent years, France has also registered high number of tourists from Brazil and Russia.

France heavily depends on tourism for economic development. It is a major contributor towards the country’s trade and since 1999, it accounts for main balance of payments surplus. In 2012, the tourist trade showed progression when it achieved about €13 billion as compared to €7.5 billion in the previous year.

There are reasons why tourists choose France as their holiday destination of choice. For example, France has varied deals for tourists, including its geography, and attractive sceneries. France also has the finest facilities, like accommodation and catering services, which have enabled it to advance in other sectors. It is also the world’s leading skiing destination, with 55 million skier days sold annually.

France also benefits from business tourism, which is a crucial sector and organizes more than 6,000 events every year. It is also positioning itself as a cultural destination, hosting a wide range of international events. Besides these, it has world-class museums, which depict its culture and the global history. Its events are very significant and they generate spin-offs, regarding its economy, international image and regional development. It has also invested in wine tourism, which is one of the most dynamic industries.

According to records, France receives twenty four million visitors, who tour wine regions. Some of its best destinations like Paris and Mont-Saint-Michel are a true indication of what the country has to offer in terms of richness, diversity and quality. Because of restructuring, people visit almost every part of the French territory since they meet the needs of international visitors.
