Flap wheel VS Grinding wheel

A flap wheel and the related flap disk is an abrasive disk, used for metal finishing. Unlike the simpler flat disks, made from a circular flat sheet of a coated abrasive, a flap wheel is made of multiple overlapping small pieces or ‘flaps’, bonded to a central hub. The sheets vary in number and are uniformly fan-shaped. It is used for grinding and repairing welding seams and positive edge burrs. They have the advantages of good elasticity, high efficiency, good heat dissipation and low noise. They can replace resin concrete grinding wheels. It has strong elasticity, high tensile and bending strength, good self-sharpness and grinding rate. High and low noise, suitable for grinding of welds and stamped parts in the cabinet. Mainly used for grinding and polishing various stainless steel and carbon steel structural parts.
Development-with developments in abrasive coating, the sheet material could withstand greater forces and speeds. This allowed the production of flap wheels for use with high speed angle grinders. These disks were different in format: flatter, like the original rigid angle grinder disks, and with the flaps arranged in a densely overlapped layout rather than radial. The extra lifetime this gave to the disk allowed their use for stock removal and metal shaping, not just finishing and polishing. The flexibility of a flap wheel is an advantage for smoothing curved work and avoids the production of facets, as was a problem for rigid disks. This was taken further advantage of with the development of foam-bonded flap wheels.
Application: suitable for polishing of stainless steel surface, especially in the fields of shipbuilding / aviation / large machinery and equipment.
A grinding wheel is a wheel composed of an abrasive compound and used for various grinding (abrasive cutting) and abrasive machining operations. Such wheels are used in bench grinding machines. The grinding wheels are generally made from a composite material consisting of coarse-particle aggregate pressed and bonded together by a cementing matrix (called the bond in grinding wheel terminology) to form a solid, circular shape. Various profiles and cross sections are available depending on the intended usage for the wheel. They may also be made from a solid steel or aluminium disc with particles bonded to the surface.
Development: Grinding wheels are consumables, although the life span can vary widely depending on the use case, from less than a day to many years. As the wheel cuts, it periodically releases individual grains of abrasive, typically because they grow dull and the increased drag pulls them out of the bond. Fresh grains are exposed in this wear process, which begin the next cycle. The rate of wear in this process is usually very predictable for a given application, and is necessary for good performance.
Application: Due to the hardness of the grinding wheel itself, it can grind harder workpieces, especially in the cutting and grinding of hard alloys and metal materials.
All in all, from their advantage and development, although the two wheels uses are both for grinding, the grinding effect is different. The Flap wheel is mainly used for grinding and polishing, and the flap wheel is relative soft, so it has strong elasticity and high safety. Grinding wheels with certain hardness, the grinding efficiency is relatively high, and it has high wear resistance, so it is widely used in cutting and grinding. We can choose to use these two products according to our needs.
