Are you dreaming of buying a new or second-hand motorhome? Think of the places you can go and the freedom you’ll have with your own motorhome vehicle. It’s an important purchase, and since the price tag on a new or used one can be high, it is important you make the right choice.

What do you need to know about before you decide on a motorhome? Check out our guide to purchasing a campervan, motorhome or caravan, including how to make the best choice and what you need to look out for so you don’t end up spending more money than you should.

Know What You Want

It is a good idea to have some clear guidelines in your head about what you want from your motorhome. There are so many different types of motorhome on the market, it is easy to get overwhelmed with the choice if you do not have a shortlist of essential features. So, think about whether size matters for you. Do you want the biggest motorhome money can buy, so you have all the home comforts on your travels? Or do you want a compact van you can also take to the shops to get your groceries? Will you need space for dogs, grandchildren and spouse? Or just for you? Do you want a bathroom? Are you interested in higher quality fittings and furnishings? Take some time to do your research and really know what you want. You may also need to compromise on some features. The ideal van may exist, but it might not be in your price range. Decide what you can do without and what you must have.

Know Your Budget

You will be able to find a motorhome that fits your needs, no matter your budget. There will also be many motorhomes that offer everything that you need and are outside your budget, but you can ignore those since you have the choice. Bear in mind that you don’t necessarily have to buy new. Motorhomes tend to keep their value, so second-hand is always a good option.

Know Your Limits

If you passed your test after January 1997 and you have a regular driving licence, there are weight limits to the type of van you can drive. If you passed your test before that, the weight limits don’t apply. Check your licence to make sure. Also, check that you have space to park your motorhome before you buy it. It’s no good if the vehicle ends up sticking out into the road because your drive isn’t long enough.

Think About Winter

Think about what you are going to do during the winter, considering you won't be using your van much during this time. If you cannot store your motorhome inside, a full motorhome cover provides the next-best protection. Or use a windscreen cover to protect your motorhome. Always leave your vehicle on hard standing rather than on mud or soil, which can lead to a build-up of damp inside.

Know Your Layout

Most people that trade in their van shortly after purchase are dissatisfied with the layout. So, this aspect is obviously important. There are so many configurations to choose from, you will definitely find something you appreciate. Try to look at as many vans as possible before making your final choice. Think about how a van feels to you and what you will enjoy about it on your holidays. For example, Carado motorhomes Scotland come with modern and spacious layouts that provide plenty of breathing room for everyone.
