The key reasons for unstable, unsafe loads that end up as accidents include driving at excess speeds, loading loose or damaged loads, overloading, and off-center loads. While getting the forklift certification in NJ, your instructor will get you acquainted with the following five steps that need to be taken care of so as to make sure a stable load every time you operate a forklift truck.

Handling a Load

  • Make use of load extension backrest when required.
  • Make sure the load is as centered as possible on the forks. If it is impractical to circumvent carrying an off-center load, position it so the heaviest part is close to the front of the wheels.
  • Secure the load so it is steady and cannot move around. Do not make an effort to pick up damaged loads unless it has been protected by banding or wrapping.
  • The load capacity of the forklift truck should not be exceeded.

Approaching a Load

  • Make sure the head is clear prior to picking up any load.
  • Forks should be raised only if the brake is set and the forklift is stopped.
  • Tip-over usually takes place when the forklift is moving too quickly. So, the load should be approached slowly and carefully.
  • Set the direction control to neutral.
  • Make sure the forklift is directly in front of the load and centered on it. Ensure the right height of the forks.

Regulating position of the mast

  • A forklift should be moved with mast tilted backward.
  • The mast should be tilted backward while working with the utmost capacity load and the load should be positioned so the heaviest part is next to the carriage.
  • Apart from while picking up the load, avoid tilting forward with a load with forks elevated.
  • The mast should be tilted backward adequately to stabilize it while stacking the load.
  • The mast should be tilted forward really slowly as soon as you are all set to stack the load. Avoid traveling with the mast tilted forward.

Regulating position of the forks

  • So as to stabilize the load, the mast should be tilted back.
  • The weight of the load should always be centered between the forks. The forks can be adjusted manually or using a fork positioned.
  • The forks should be positioned as far beneath the load as feasible.
  • Prior to lifting the load, the forks should be leveled.

Lifting the load

  • Prior to lifting the load, make sure there is sufficient overhead clearance.
  • The load should be lifted slowly and the mast should be tilted backward a little to stabilize it.
  • The lift control should be returned to the neutral position slowly.

While preparing for the forklift certification in NJ, your instructor will train you about several safe practices of overall load handling. Every OSHA-compliant forklift training program is provided with hands-on practical sessions to make sure you know ways to handle loads adequately and safely with a forklift truck.
