Branding yourself as an expert is the first step towards an effective attraction marketing strategy. Once you've done this, you can more easily stand out from the crowd of other yahoos trying to do the same thing you are.

Startups and small home-based businesses can't compete with large, corporations or their advertising budgets. They have to find and use effective strategies on little to no budget. They need to create traffic to their sites, and the most efficient and cost-effective way to do that is to use attraction marketing principles to their utmost capacity.

If you're worried that an inexperienced internet entrepreneur can't possibly create a personal brand, don't. We have provided 7 steps toward that very purpose, which will help establish your business' credibility and allow you to attract and maintain people who are receptive to the value, insight, and goods you have to offer them.

  1. Determine your target market. It's impossible to craft an image if you don't know who you want to be attracted to it. Consider the problems you want to solve for what customers. What's bothering them? Where will they look for those solutions? To whom?
  2. Establish your uniqueness. Take a look at what others in your field are doing to brand themselves and find what distinguishes you from them. What about you, as a person, is different than the people who are selling similar products or services to yours? (Perhaps the ten years you spent running PTA meetings makes you better at dealing with parents than the fresh-out-of-college marketing "whiz" who blasts his friends' old college Facebook pages with ads.)
  3. Make a list of problems you can solve. Write down times you have solved these problems within the context of the leadership (or supporter) position you had at summer camp, etc. (This is meant as a confidence booster.)
  4. Get a website. Everyone in attraction marketing must have an online presence of some kind. (Check out sites like for evidence of how easy this is to accomplish.) The Internet isn't going anywhere. Free or cheap attraction marketing tools will all funnel themselves through the Internet. Learn how you can best use it to your advantage. (Cheap companies like and SiteBuild are a great place to start.)
  5. Build trust. The truth of the matter is that most businesspeople, customers, and clients I have encountered had a slew of personal and emotional blocks that had hindered their success. People like to assume that they have come to conclusions themselves, so it's best that you learn to be a great communicator-which includes becoming an effective listener. The better the listener you are, the better able you'll be to guide people through the resources and goods you have to solve their problem.
  6. Learn to write and start a blog, a free newsletter, or submitting ezine articles. The best way to brand yourself is to offer free advice and help people to succeed. If you can afford it, hire a copywriter or ghost writer. Nothing makes you more credible to people than to be able to call yourself an author.
  7. BE SINCERE. This is easily the most important part of the entire process. People will always be more ready to trust you if you are sincere in wanting to help them. Know this: people know whether the person suggesting them home based business is in it for money or for love. They won't do business with you if they sense that your motivations are any less than above board. Choose something you believe in, be enthusiastic about it, and watch as people are more and more attracted to you.
