Most couples who try to get pregnant typically get pregnant within six months of trying, which accounts for as much as 90 percent of couples. But, some men and women, no matter how much they try, can't get pregnant without medical intervention.

Both men and women struggle with infertility. It affects both men and women across the United States and around the world. In fact, they say that as much as 10 to 15 percent of couples in the United States suffer from infertility.

• Hormonal problems, such as hair growth changes, reduced sexual desire and reduced sexual function in men

Most couples with infertility issues seek medical intervention to find a resolution and become pregnant. In most cases, couples are able to find a solution and become pregnant.

Most couples who have infertility problems need to see an infertility doctor if they desire to get pregnant. Infertility doctors help couples find alternatives for becoming pregnant. Much of their treatment procedures involves taking evaluations of the couple to find out the origin of their infertility problems, and then finding appropriate medical treatments to facilitate fertility in either party.

The most common medical procedure found at infertility clinics involve advanced reproductive technology. Although some of those advanced treatments do have high success rates, they're often expensive and, sometimes, risky for the couple to try without having knowledge of the procedure. That's why couples should research infertility doctors before selecting one.

Questions to ask infertility doctors

Any couple will have questions for their infertility doctor. Asking questions is a great way to learn all you can about a procedure before undergoing that particular form of treatment. Women and men are encouraged to ask their infertility doctors (or candidates) these questions before proceeding with treatment:

• How long have you been practicing as an infertility doctor?
• How long have you and your staff have been working at your practice?
• What types of fertility procedures do you handle? How often do you perform your procedures? What you do you use to perform your procedures?
• Do have an age requirement for your fertility treatments?
• When you do an advanced fertility procedure (such as those that implant a certain number of eggs), does the patient or the doctor choose how many eggs get implanted?
• How many cycles do you handle each year?
• How much do your treatments cost?

Any reputable fertility clinic or infertility doctors will have the time and interest in answering your questions. If they don't, it's highly suggested to find infertility doctors who will answer your questions.
