Ilkal Saree is a traditional form of saree which is common feminine wear in India. The Craft started in the 8th century AD., made in the Ilkal region of the Bagalkot district of Karnataka, known for its durability and comfortableness as compared to other types of sarees because of the fine quality yarns used, with the best tensile strength to withstand the traditional pit loom weaving technique.

Ilkal Sarees are produced primarily on pit looms with a combination of three types of different yarns – Cotton x Art Silk, Cotton x Silk, Silk x Silk. There are two types of Ilkal Sarees — handloom and made by power loom. The handloom sarees are in high demand as it is a traditional process and also they are more durable. Ilkal Sarees are woven using Cotton Warp on the body and art silk warp for border and art silk warp for the pallu portion of the saree. Pure silk is also used based on the requirement.

The Peculiar characteristics of Ilkal Sarees are joining the body warp with pallu warp, which is locally called as TOPI TENI. This Technique is exclusively used for Ilkal Sarees Production.

  • Ragavali – With simple checks of two and four ends are generally called as Ragavali.
  • Kaddi Chikki – Smaller Checks Pattern.
  • Patang Checks – Also known as shirting checks which have more detailed checks.
  • Mandap checks – The two warp yarns and weft are placed at a certain distance to form larger checks.
  • Dapla checks – Are usually like the Mandap but smaller in size.
  • Jabra Patta – Zebra stripes with broad stripes in the body.
  • Pancarangi – Checks with normally three or more colored ends.
  • Chandrekali – These sarees usually has a plain bluish-black body.
  • Basanthi – Sarees with a combination of red and orange colors are known as Basanthi.

Maintenance

  • If it is a Cotton Saree then one can wash it in cold water.
  • Once the saree is washed with water, dry it in shades.
  • Never soak and bleach the saree.
