Present Scenario of Indian Electronics Business

Let us start by a positive note that it is an established fact that India has, even in its worst scenario, never been exactly secondary to any nation world-wide as far as electronics business is concerned. India as such has always been seen as a top destination for Information Technology services and if it’s true then IT hardware sector, i.e., electronics sector also is trying to show its prowess both at indigenous and at global level.

Electronics Business in context of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)

Indian Government has been seen quoting that import of second-hand or refurbished electronics and IT goods without registration with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is prohibited.

Requirement of Compulsory Registration under the Electronics goods order 2012, imports of electronics goods is allowed through the registration with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Though one can exercise a bleak option to obtain an exemption letter from the Ministry of IT and Electronics yet why to create a situation for kicking self-goals specifically when it is an established fact that to obtain such official certifications one needs to pay ‘just a negligible fee’ directly applying to BIS or through BIS agent or BIS Consultant who is proven and trusted service provider with a long history.

BIS Registration is a compulsory registration scheme (CRS) for electronic and IT products to get launched in Indian market. Currently, there are 49 products which are mentioned in mandatory product list for BIS registration in India. For every mandatory product, an Indian Standard (IS) is defined under which it is to apply for the BIS Certificate at BIS office. Manufacturers must check the mandatory list to see which IS is applicable to their product. After getting BIS certificate, the manufactured product must be labeled with BIS logo imprinted on it along with proper dimensions as guided by BIS. Product with BIS Logo embossed on it ensures that it is a quality product and is safe for the consumers who are going to use it. Since customer safety is the first priority, Bureau of Indian Standards is highly cautious about it. Process to get BIS Certificate involves two easy steps; viz. First is Sample Product testing via BIS approved lab and the other is submission of online application along with testing report, factory documents and undertaking. Foreign manufacturers need All India Representative (AIR) who can represent their business to BIS in India. They can only apply for BIS certificate through AIR and is a requisition by BIS. Any BIS agent or BIS Consultancy can act as AIR for any foreign manufacturer who is seeking to get the required certificate for their product to get launched in Indian market.

In the futuristic set ups, the successful business related to electronics industry shall be those who anticipated the necessity to possess Bureau of Indian Standards certification. The Government without mincing words has served the Electronics Companies, with a soft warning that without BIS certification there may not be permission to carry import-export trades.
