Online banking has become an indispensable part of our lives. From making payments to transferring funds to our family and friends in times of needs, we can’t imagine our lives without it. However, just like it comes with advantages, it also has some cons too.

One of the biggest threats of using online banking is exposing your bank accounts to frauds. However, you can easily negate this threat by taking some precautionary measures. Let's look at five basic steps that you can take to keep your account safe from online frauds.

  1. Keep Your Computer Safe from Online Malware:

Malware is an online virus that can get installed in your computer, which can help a fraudster get sensitive information from your computer such as your banking details next time you log-in. This malware can come in your computer in many ways, the most common being through clicking on suspicious links. Never click on suspicious links on your phone or computer, especially when it's coming from unknown sources. Moreover, install an effective anti-virus in your phone or laptop to keep it free from any such suspicious attacks.

  1. Don’t Sign-in to your banking account by clicking on a Link:

Many times, organisations or even your friends may send you links to make online payments. Unless that link that takes you to a trusted payment gateway, don’t use the link. Never use the link if it takes you to your bank log-in page and asks you to log-in to your bank using your ID and password. Most of these pages that may appear to be that of your trusted bank are fraud pages that record your ID and password which can be later used by fraudsters.

  1. Don’t Share Your Online Banking Details with Anyone:
  2. While banks send out communication mails and messages to its customers regarding this regularly, many still make the mistake of sharing their online banking details to fraudsters. A common type of fraud in this category is when customers lookup for customer care number of the bank online and dial the first number they see. It is usually answered by a fraudster posing as a bank official who tactfully asks the customers to share their banking details in lieu of helping them.
  3. Once the data is recorded, the information is then used to make fraudulent transactions. Firstly, always go to the official website of the bank to find out their customer care number rather than searching for it on the Internet. Secondly, never share your bank details, even if someone is posing as a bank official.
  4. Access Your Account Safely

Ensuring you take all the steps to access your bank account safely is your responsibility as a customer. Try to use your own device to log-in to your bank. If you are using a public computer, make sure it can be trusted and delete all cookies and history once you have logged out.

Moreover, avoid using public wi-fi network when accessing your account. Use a trusted network only. If you have to log-in to your account in public, prefer your mobile network over public wi-fi.

  1. Keep Changing Your Passwords Regularly

Keep changing your password regularly to ensure that your account stays out of the hands of fraudsters. While this is a known trick to keep your bank account safe, most people don't change their password for years. However, it would help if you tried to change your password every 3 months to keep it safe.
