People migrate from place to place either for higher education or career growth. People who move abroad for higher education are supposed to pre-prepare themselves in many aspects. Entering a university demands many factors to be satisfied. IELTS exams play a major role in getting admission in universities abroad.

International English Language Testing System is the expansion of IELTS. This test is conducted for testing the proficiency of the English language. IELTS is recognized globally by many educational institutes, governments and professional bodies.

This test is jointly owned by

  1. IELTS Australia
  2. Cambridge Assessment of English
  3. British Council and
  4. IDP

How to write IELTS Exam:

IELTS is a bit difficult test and demands proper preparation. A proper strategy should be followed by the candidate for the successful completion of the test. Free sample question papers are readily available online which can be used by candidates. By doing so the candidate can acquire better knowledge on the test and the pattern followed in the test.

For improving listening skills the candidate should focus more on monologues and conversations. The Basic English knowledge of the candidate is tested in reading and writing tests. It is mandatory for the candidate to concentrate more on grammar. The communication skill is tested in the speaking test. The candidate should prepare to speak without any hesitation and grammatical error.

Types of IELTS test:

IELTS test is categorized into two:

  1. Academic
  2. General Training

Academic: this test is used to check whether your English proficiency is suitable for an academic environment.General Training: this test is conducted to test your English proficiency in a practical context.

IELTS exam pattern:

Both IELTS Academic and IELTS general training covers reading, writing listening and speaking test. The subject matter for both listening and speaking skills are the same for the academic and general test. Both the tests follow different subject matter for reading and writing.

The total time taken for completing the test is 2 hours 45 minutes. Listening, reading and writing test are conducted on the same day. The speaking test will be conducted either before or after one week of completing other tests.

Listening test:

The time taken for completing this test is 30 minutes. The candidate is made to listen to four recordings and to answer the questions related to it.

In 1st recording is a conversation between two people on the social context. In the 2nd recording, a monologue on everyday social context is played. The 3rd recording is a conversation between four people in the educational context. The last recording is a monologue on an academic subject.

Here the candidate is supposed to answer 40 questions and each question carries one mark. The mark scored is converted to IELTS 9 band scale.

Speaking

The time taken for the speaking test is 11 to 14 minutes. This test includes three parts. In part one the candidate is asked to answer general questions. In the second part the student is given a card and asked to talk on the topic mentioned on it. in last part, questions related to part two are asked.

Academic reading:

The test takes 60 minutes to complete. This test includes reading of three long texts taken from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers. This test is for candidates who try to enter any university or in search of professional registration.

General training reading:

For this test, the extracts are taken from books, magazines, notices, newspapers, company handbooks, and advertisements. The materials used are encountered on a daily basis.

Academic writing:

In task one, the candidate is given a graph, table, chart or diagram to describe the data and the process involved in it.

In task two the candidate is asked to write an essay on a particular topic.

General training writing:

The time consumed for this test is also 60 minutes. The topic chosen is of general interest.

In task one, the candidate is given a situation and is made to write a request letter elaborating the situation. The format to be followed can be either formal or semi-formal.

In task two the candidate is supposed to write an essay on a specific problem or argument. The candidate can use personal style.

IELTS band score:

The score of IELTS ranges from 0 to 9. 0.5 scores are also accepted in IELTS. Each skill like listening, reading, speaking, and writing are given separate band scores. The average of these scores is considered as overall band score.

  1. If the average score is 7.35, the overall score is marked as 7.5
  2. in case of the average score is 7.75, then the overall score is marked as 8
  3. the average score is 7.1, then the overall score is marked as 7
  4. The overall score is always rounded to the nearest 0.5.
