What does Akshaya Patra do?

The Akshaya Patra Foundation is registered under Section 80G which works towards children’s cause with the belief that no child should be deprived of education due to hunger. Every day, it feeds 1.8 million children with healthy school meals across 52 locations of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Daman & DNH, Delhi, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh.

The Foundation serves locally palatable, healthy and nutritious meals. It serves different items every day in a cyclical order so that children can get the right amount of nutrition and a variety of food items on their plates. For example –Bendekai pulsu curry is served in Andhra Pradesh, Thepla in Rajasthan, Leaf pappu and cucumber Pappu in Telangana, Dal Dhokli in Gujarat, Aloo soyabadi in Chhattisgarh, Bisibelebath in Karnataka, etc.

Akshaya Patra constantly works towards improving its operations and quality of service towards children’s mid-day meal service. With help from various donors and knowledge partners, it implements new technologies to ensure the delivery of healthy and wholesome meals to children.

Impact of the Mid-Day Meal Programme

Mid-day meals have a great impact on children:

  • It helps in eliminating classroom hunger. A full stomach helps them concentrate better without any diversions in class.
  • When there is improved attention in school, their grades improve automatically and it helps in motivating them to chase their dreams.
  • It helps in decreasing the school drop-out rate. School meals are a potential intervention to help children come back to school every single day.
  • Mid-day meals significantly improve school enrolment rates.
