Owning a personal garden within the premises of one’s own home used to be quite a common trend in the past. However, as a result of rapid urbanization, lack of space surfaced as a major issue. Especially those living in large cities face this problem more, as these areas are densely populated and they get very less or no extra space for a garden.

You too might be facing the same problem if you are a nature lover, and happen to be a city dweller. However, that doesn’t mean that you need to compromise with your fascinations for gardening just because you don’t have space for one. You can use several ways to create your own green corner rich in foliage even within a small space.

Requirements:

As you might have guessed already, gardening in a compact area is different from gardening in a large space dedicated to it.

Firstly, as your plants would be getting much lesser soil to grow on, it must be very fertile. This would make up for the nutrients that the plants would have been able to draw from larger quantities of soil.Secondly, you need to pay attention to environmental factors such as sunlight. Depending on the amount of light the plants can receive in a certain part of your home, you need to choose your plants wisely. It wouldn’t be smart to grow plants that need a lot of sunlight if it barely receives any.Thirdly, if you are living in such a city it is quite probable that you might have a busy schedule with work. In that case, you should choose plants that require relatively lesser care as compared to some plants which need constant nurturing.Ideas to deal with the lack of space:

Even if you don’t have any extra plot of land for a garden at all, you can still live amidst greenery if you simply get a bit creative.

You might be facing a shortage of space as in the floor area, but you still have plenty of vertical space. Simply use tiered flowerbeds or reuse old shelves and ladder to arrange your garden in multiple layers. You may also hang small baskets with flowering plants or herbs from the ceilings of your balcony and porch. You can reuse your junk items to beautify your home. Old tumblers, buckets, boxes, etc. can double as flower pots. All you have to do is fill them with flowering plants and use them as decorations for your rooms. You can even such small containers on your dining table, on cabinets and anywhere they fit in nicely. You might be able to create some space for gardening even if you don’t have any extra land. For example, if the staircase in your porch or terrace is wide, you can utilize the extra width to create flower beds. You may also add window boxes, which would give your home a beautiful makeover.

With land becoming more and more scarce and expensive, people are already implementing these strategies for gardening in small spaces. No wonder, why they are turning out to be increasingly popular among city folks.
