Though cardiovascular conditions can be treated with diet, exercise and change in lifestyle, yet medications are often needed for faster results. These medicines may be prescribed temporarily or permanently depending on the patient’s needs. Cardiovascular Drugs encompass a large number of prescription medications that are used to control heart related diseases and disorders. They can broadly be classified into:

  • Anti-Anginals
  • Heart Failure Drugs
  • Cardiac Glycosides
  • Lipid Lowering Drugs

Anti-Anginal Drugs

Anti-Anginal Drugs are used to treat disease of the coronary arteries. The Coronary arteries supply oxygen laden blood from the left ventricle to other heart muscles. Coronary arteries maintain cardiac function to adapt to sudden demand of blood due to physical endurance. Typically, arteries respond to the sudden inrush of blood with dilation, however, it is possible that they may have developed athermanous deposit that restrict the flow of blood even in normal condition.

Heart Failure Drugs

Heart Failure is the inability of heart to pump adequate amount of blood through the body. In such a situation, blood backs up or accumulates in the lungs, feet, legs, kidney, liver, stomach etc.

Types Of Heart Failure Drugs

  • Diuretics: Diuretics also known as "water pills" eliminate excess fluid in the tissue and circulation, relieving many symptoms of heart failure. Diuretics cause frequent urination to drain out excess of fluid in the body. Many Diuretics wash out potassium from the body as well.
  • ACE Inhibitors: ACE or Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibitors prevent the formation of hormone that constrict blood vessel. This drug improves prognosis for patients with heart failure. The use of ACE Inhibitors in patient with heart failure reduces the need for hospitalization.

Cardiac Glycosides

Cardiac Glycosides are compounds that have a powerful effect on the heart muscle that helps in increasing the force of contraction. These drugs are used to strengthen the pumping capacity of the heart and improve irregular heartbeat. This helps to eliminate excess fluid and improve blood circulation.

Lipid Lowering Drugs

Some cholesterol is necessary for normal health functioning however excess of it can lead to the development of atherosclerosis, an artery clogging disease that is a major cause of heart attack, high blood pressure, high blood fat. The amount of cholesterol in blood can be reduced by decreasing the fat content of the diet.
