Students may get anxious if they need to take an International English Language Test or a Trinity exam. Even the best students may get test anxiety and it may have nothing to do with how many hours they study and even the best students may get stumped on a few of the test questions? However a student who is anxious about a test, may be able to train his/her brain to calm themselves down.

Students may panic if they are too concerned with getting every answer right and. Scientists in the UK discovered, that by allowing test takers to take 10 minutes writing their thoughts and feelings, students were able to release some of their anxiety. With testers not worried about their fears, students taking the IELTS exam got better marks.

Is there a link between anxiety and test-taking?

Many experts in psychology and some students have said that their test performance may not offer an accurate view of their knowledge. Many students may not be able to perform their best under pressure when taking the Trinity exam or the IELTS. Is too much credit given to text anxiety? Why are students so nervous if standardised tests, such as IELTS exams, are not scored with a letter or by a percentage?

Researchers found test takers were able to raise their test scores. Students would ease some of their anxiety by writing about their feelings for 10 minutes. Researchers found that worrying impedes the brain’s ability to do harder mental tasks, such as mathematical computations or use grammar correctly. Did you know that worrying may short out a person’s short term memory temporarily? A person may not be able to recall this information temporarily, especially since worry keeps a person from concentrating.

Do researcher’s observations have any merit?

While researchers may not be able to view inside the brain of a student who is taking English language classes, they can make a direct connection between anxiety and a student’s ability to retain learned information. Anxiety can make it harder for students to get the IELTS score they want after taking the test once.

Have you ever taken a test that measures a student’s performance by a single number score? Did you know that the score received on an IELTS, in some countries, may determine a student’s future career path? This is why a test, such as the IELTS, is important for students. It may also explain why students from foreign countries spend hours studying in the classroom for exams.
