The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has published ISO 17034: 2016 on the standard requirements for the ability of raw material manufacturers (RMPs). Previously, these requirements were discussed in ISO Guide 34, which was originally developed by the ISO Committee (ISO / REMCO). The requirement of the International Standard is made when several accreditation bodies have not been able to approve the guidelines, at all, and in some countries ISO Guide 34 may serve as an approved standard for meeting ISO/IEC 17025.

The ISO 17034 content is in line with the latest editions of the other relevant ISO Guides. Material production requirements (RMs) are made explicit in the new standard, explaining the requirements for the (non-approved) stationery and the additional requirements for the reference material.

ISO 17034: 2016 specifies standard requirements for RMP capabilities and aims to be used as part of standard RM quality assurance processes for RM production. Includes production of all types of RMs, including CRMs. ISO/IEC 17025 is the only used statement of ISO 17034, while ISO Guides has acquired an instructive status in this change. ISO 17034: 2016 covers production of RMs, including certified and non-certified RMs.

Therefore, ISO 17034: 2016 requirements were revised, listing RMs for the first time and secondly for additional CRM requirements. It was clarified that in CRM the standard requirements of RM need to be followed, and in addition the specific requirements of CRMs must be met.

With ISO 17034: 2016, the status indicators that can be used with standardized RMPs are expanded. Some requirements are not new but clearly defined. In accordance with ISO 17034: 2016, as long as they deeply cover the new requirements for impartiality and risk and opportunity. ISO 17034: 2016 requires the ISO / IEC 17025 process for all calibration functions performed during the execution of RMs, but will allow the RMP to seek approval to ISO 17034: 20016 without having to comply with the ISO / IEC 17025 approval.
