CLAT Exams: Eligibility, Syllabus, Exam Pattern, and Strategy

CLAT stands for Common Law Admission Test. it is a national level entrance examination which is conducted by 19 National Law Universities (NLUs) on a rotation basis. Students become eligible for this exam after passing intermediate or 12th grade. After clearing this exam, students can get admission in colleges which offer Under Graduate programmes in Law. Eligibility Criteria for CLAT Examination.

• Candidates who have passed the intermediate or equivalent examination from a recognised board (either state board or national board) are eligible to take the CLAT exam.

• Students have to score a minimum of 45% marks if they are from the unreserved category or other backward classes (OBC) category.

• Students belong to other categories including SC (Scheduled Caste), ST (Scheduled Tribe), etc. have to score a minimum of 40% marks in 10+2.

Exam Pattern for CLAT Exam

The exam is conducted in pen and paper mode, i.e., offline. The duration of the exam is 2 hours. The weightage of the exam is 150 marks for both UG and PG courses. The total number of questions asked in the exam for UG course is 150 with each question carrying one mark. All the questions are of the multiple-choice type. For PG course, the exam consists of 100 multiple choice questions with each question carrying 1 mark and 2 subjective questions of which each question carry 25 marks.

There is also a negative marking of 0.25 marks for marking incorrect option in multiple-choice questions.

Syllabus of CLAT Exam for UG Programme

The exam consists of five sections, namely, English language and comprehension, legal aptitude, logical reasoning, arithmetic and numerical ability, general knowledge and current affairs. Let’s see the weightage of each of these sections in the exam.

• English Language & Comprehension: The number of questions asked in this section is from 28 to 32. This section holds 20% weightage of the total number of questions in the exam.

• General Knowledge & Current Affairs: The number of questions asked in this section is from 35 to 39. This section holds 25% weightage of the total number of questions in the exam.

• Legal Reasoning: The number of questions asked in this section is from 35 to 39. This section holds 25% weightage of the total number of questions in the exam.

• Logical Reasoning: The number of questions asked in this section is from 28 to 32. This section holds 20% weightage of the total number of questions in the exam.

• Quantitative Aptitude & Numerical Ability: The number of questions asked in this section is from 13 to 17. This section holds 10% weightage of the total number of questions in the exam.

Syllabus of CLAT Exam for PG Programme

For Post Graduate programmes, students have to study the following subjects: Law of Torts, Family Law, Criminal Law, International Law, Property Law, Jurisprudence, Law of Contracts, and Intellectual Property Law.

The paper consists of 100 multiple questions of which 40 MCQs are asked from Constitutional Law topic and 60 questions are asked from other subjects including Law of Contracts, Law of Torts, Criminal Law, International Law, Intellectual Property Law and Jurisprudence.

This section includes static general knowledge and current affairs. In this section, questions from the legal principles and facts are asked. As the students have just passed 10+2, they are not expected to have in-depth knowledge of all these concepts. The purpose of this section is to only judge the aptitude skills of the students.

Strategy to English Language & Comprehension Section

Through this section, the level of English language of a candidate is judged. This section includes questions related to grammar and vocabulary. Unseen passages are also asked in this section. Candidates have to read a newspaper to enhance their vocabulary or they can also study the root words for the same. Grammatical part can be prepared by purchasing a good book from the market.

Strategy to Logical Reasoning Section

The questions in this section judge the logical and analytical skills of the candidates. Though this section is not too difficult, yet it requires a regular practice because candidates may be puzzled in tricky questions.

Strategy to Quantitative Aptitude and Numerical Ability Section

This section includes questions from mathematics up to 10th level. The topics in this section include simple and compound interest, profit and loss, percentage, average time and work, etc. Candidates have to practice well to score good marks in this section.
