This one is for all of you out there who love travelling and are blessed with the means to invest in your well-being, taking a good break with family and yearning to be abroad, someplace else!

Ever thought about being anywhere near the Arctic circle? Well, then Tromso, Norway, is highly recommended by the author who has had the privilege of travelling there.

Tromso is all of 69 degrees north, 350 kms North of the Arctic circle, famous for the midnight sun in the summer’s and exotic view of the Northern Lights (Aurora borealis) in the winter.

I am an avid traveler and decided to Tromso instead as the weather there was much better and I was sure to see the Northern Lights as the place had a milder coastal climate because of the Gulf stream, and also, since it was located in the middle of the Northern Lights Oval.

Northern Lights is not the only thing in Tromso, one could also go for ice sledding on the husky or the reindeer or both, depends on how much one may be willing to spend. Other activities around include, whale watching (orcas and humpback etc.), Fjords and meeting and listening to the history of the Sami, the family which still rears the reindeers. Time permitting, one could also explore the Magic Ice, Polar Park and also take the cable car from Solliveien in Tromsdalen up to the mountain ledge Storsteinen (421 m above sea level) in just four minutes, have a leisurely lunch or dinner in a restaurant while enjoying a panoramic view of the Tromso city and surrounding islands. For a bit more adventure, rent a car and drive around with a google friendly map, this is suggested with a rider and caution: to be done only if you have driven on roads covered with ice before and with winter tyres.

It is a breathtaking site to watch the sun rise next to the hemisphere and set right there, clear skies, the reflection of the moon in the Arctic ocean and a bonfire by the lake during the visit to the Northern Lights. With up to a minimum of -22 degrees, it still feels warm with thermal suits provided by the agencies through which one wre to make their bookings.

The author of this article likes to travel on her own and also make her own bookings, as Europe is safe when travelling alone. If not comfortable and you do not have the time, engage an agent to help plan for you but also do your own preliminary research on the internet, viator or official Tromso city website, compare the rates and the packages and go for the best!

When preparing for your luggage, go for layers in clothing, a thermal, a full sleeves T-shirt, a pull over and a jacket, just so that you can get rid of the layers once you move indoors which is extremely well heated. Don’t forget to travel light as unlike India, you will have to carry your own bags. Don’t forget the cap to cover your head or even a monkey cap should be good if your nose gets cold easily.

In order to get the best deal, plan now, the ideal time to visit is any time between November and February.
