Introduction

Avocado is a fruit that is pear-shaped with a green, rough outer cover but it is fleshy inside with a huge seed residing right in the middle of the fruit. Avocados can be majorly divided into two categories – Florida Avocados and California Avocados. Apart from these two major categories, there are some other popular varieties of Avocados Grown in California as per their sizes, shapes, colors, textures, and tastes. The taste of the avocados can be nutty or creamy as per the variety you are consuming. However, most California Avocado Varieties taste almost similar. Yet, they are quite different in other aspects. So, in this article, we are going to reveal the different varieties of avocados that you can witness locally in California.

Hass Avocados: This particular variety of avocados is generally grown in Southern California. They are completely natural and tastes delicious. The soil, as found in the southern parts of California, is considered to be ideal for the farming of Hass avocados. Such Avocados Grown in California needs a lot of sunlight, an appropriate drainage system, and cold oceanic breezes throughout the year to grow properly. These avocados have a creamy and velvety interior part that tastes very nice. The outer skins of the Hass avocados are generally green, but they turn to purple-black when fully ripe. There are various kinds of California Avocado Varieties seen throughout California, but about ninety-five percent of them are of are Hass avocados. This variety is not only grown in abundance but also extremely popular all over the United States. This crop generally lasts from the spring season to the fall. Some varieties of the Hass avocados are certified as completely organic fruit. There are many avocado farms all over Southern California where natural and organic Hass avocados are farmed all over the year.

Reed Avocados: Another popular variety is the Reed Avocados. This is basically a summertime crop that is available until later during the fall season. The Reed avocados that are growing in the prime summertime are delicious. They are generally large and almost round in shape, which makes them look like a ball. If you take one such avocado in your hand, you will feel that you are holding a softball rather than an avocado. They are ideal to be sliced and eaten, or they can be added to various salads. They can also be consumed as a substitute for an entire meal. Due to the round shape and the size of the avocado, it looks like a bowl when cutting into half and the seed is removed. This is another popular way of eating the Reed avocados. You need to cut in into two halves, remove the seed from the center, fill the middle with your favorite ingredients, and you are ready to enjoy a scrumptious fruit meal. But, the bad news is, this variety of avocados are not easily available, often rare to find, and available only in some selected stores in Southern California. Yet, if you catch hold of one such avocado, you will definitely like to eat it again because of its taste.

Fuerte Avocados: The Fuerte Avocados Grown in California is regular favorites for many out there. This particular variety is generally grown during the winter season in California. The name of this fruit has a beautiful metaphor attached to it. The Spanish term ‘Fuerte’ means strong. This variety of avocados is strong enough to survive even the coldest temperatures. This is the only one among all California Avocado Varieties that can withstand the cold of California. Also, the Fuerte avocados look different than other avocados as well. They have a smooth outer skin and a comparatively hard flesh inside. For a fact, there are very few trees left in California that are of this avocado variety. Also, this particular variety of avocados is no longer available through local retail stores. Yet, some growers are fond of this variety and some regular customers love to consume Fuerte Avocados.

Conclusion

So, now you know about three main varieties of the avocados that are generally grown in California – Hass, Reed, and Fuerte Avocados. Among the three, the Hass avocados are commercially grown all over California, especially in Southern California, because this specific variety has a longer shelf life.
