Asana is a very simple word that has many meanings and implications for life on the path of yoga. On

The surface-level "asana" translates in English to mean "pose", "posture", or "position". One set of root

Words for "asana" are "ass" (meaning hip) and "ana" (meaning sitting) brings a deeper level of

Understanding in the context for life which is further expanded upon by an aphorism in the Yoga Sutra of

Patanjali: Sthiram Sukham Asanam.

Sthiram refers to stillness, Sukham points to comfortability or happiness, and Asanam again refers to

Posture.

With this sutra and the translation of the root words mentioned above ("ass" and "ana"), one

Can arrive at a meaning for the word Asana as Position that is comfortable and steady for an extended

Period of time.

what does Hatha Yoga mean in your own words?

Hatha Yoga is the science of balance between the solar and lunar forces within the gross and subtle

bodies to move towards realization and empowered living free of falsehoods in the genetic lineage and

physical world. The name Hatha means sun channel and moon channel, with the sun channel being the

masculine, action, will, and determination orientation and the moon channel being the feminine,

passive, resting, and receptive channel.

This style of yoga works on a physical and Pranic level to open and purify the Nadis or channels through

which energy can flow through the body. As the body becomes purified blockages to the flow of energy

become released and removed from the body, and the vehicle for reaching samadhi in meditation

becomes ever stronger and more capable.

The practice of Hatha yoga brings a balance to the physical and mental bodies by balancing the

masculine and feminine aspects within the person. This is done with a special focus on purifying and

opening the channels or nadis through which the flow of prana travels through the body.

It is the science of integration and balance of the solar force and the lunar forces, by opening the Shiva

and Shakti aspects within to a balanced union, from the root or Muladhara chakra where Shakti rests

and the crown or Sahasrara chakra where Shiva penetrates and creates an open space for these two

forces to flow into a union of dancing within the heart or Anahata chakra.

As such a pure balance is further and further achieved disturbances in the physical form, vital energy,

mind, and intellect fall away giving way to the experience of bliss and realization of the true nature of

self. The practice of Hatha is persistent and devoted taking place every single day and fosters an

interiorized environment conducive to experiencing samadhi and beyond.

But why would one want to sit in a position that is stable and comfortable for long periods of time? Well,

Another translation of the same sutra above brings us even closer to what asana may mean for one’s life

Journey and that is "Resolutely abide (or being thoroughly established) in a good space". It can be agreed

That every being wants to transcend the suffering in their life, and those with great wisdom have found

That the root source of all suffering is the mind, the mind attached to the senses, emotions, and desires

To escape or placate pain and suffering. The mind is intrinsically connected to the physical body, so one

Vehicle to reach beyond the experience of pain is the act of stilling one’s body to still the more subtle

Layers of existence such as energetic flows, mind activity, emotional activity, and reach into timeless

Bliss, Samadhi, and beyond to enlightenment.

By looking at the breakout of the syllables of the word "a-sa-na" we find yet another layer to drive home

This student’s current level of understanding of this word, action, and concept:

"Aa" which comes from the word "abayas" which explains an action ongoing practice is involved here.

"Sa" which comes from the word "Sanyam" describing patience with this practice.

"Na" Which comes from the word "Nirantarta" which tells us that this action of practice and patience

Needs to occur daily.

The role of yoga asana is important to live because through daily practice with patience while training

The body to be still, steady, and comfortable one can calm the mind, bring peace to all layers of

Existence and consciousness can reach beyond the experience of pain to dissolve all suffering and

Realize the true nature of self and all things in this universe.
