The construction of cost-effective and profitable photovoltaic power plants represents the most important goal and core competitiveness of all solar manufacturers. In fact, profitability depends not only on the efficiency or high performance of the solar module itself, but also on a series of components that do not appear to be directly related to the module. For example, if the photovoltaic power station fails to use a suitable cable, it will affect the service life of the entire system. So, what is photovoltaic cable?

Photovoltaic cable is an electron beam cross-linked cable with a temperature rating of 120 °C, which is equivalent to 18 years at a continuous temperature of 90 °C, and has a longer service life when the temperature is lower than 90 °C.

The characteristic of photovoltaic cable is determined by its special insulating material and sheath material, which is called cross-linked PE, after being irradiated by irradiation accelerator, the molecular structure of cable material will be changed, thus providing its performance in various aspects. During installation and maintenance, the cable can be routed on the sharp edge of the roof structure, and the cable shall be subjected to pressure, bending, tension, cross tensile load and strong impact. If the cable sheath strength is not enough, the cable insulation will be seriously damaged, which will affect the service life of the whole cable, or lead to short circuit, fire and personnel injury risk and other problems.

The cables used in the low-voltage DC transmission part of the solar photovoltaic system have different requirements for the connection of different components because of different environmental and technical requirements. the overall factors to be considered are: cable insulation performance, heat resistance and flame retardancy, aging performance and wire diameter specification and so on. The specific requirements are as follows:

  1. The connection cable between the solar cell module and the module is generally connected directly by the connection cable attached to the module junction box, and a special extension cable can be used when the length is not enough. According to the different power of the assembly, this kind of connecting cable has three specifications: 2.5m ", 4.0m" and 6.0m ". This kind of connecting cable uses double-layer insulated outer skin, which has excellent anti-UV, water, ozone, acid and salt erosion ability, excellent all-weather ability and wear resistance.
  2. The connection cable between the battery and the inverter requires the use of multiple flexible cords that have passed the UL test and should be connected as close as possible. The selection of short and thick cable can reduce the loss, improve the efficiency and enhance the reliability of the system.
  3. The connecting cable between the battery array and the controller or DC junction box also requires the use of multiple flexible cords that pass the UL test, and the cross-sectional area specification is determined according to the maximum output current of the square matrix.

The cross-sectional area of DC cable in each part is determined according to the following principles: the connecting cable between solar cell module and module, the connecting cable between battery and battery, and the connecting cable with AC load. Generally, the rated current of the selected cable is 1.25 times of the maximum continuous working current in each cable. For the connection cable between the solar cell array and the square array, and between the battery (group) and the inverter, the rated current of the cable is generally 1.5 times the maximum continuous working current in each cable.
