Tips to Maintain Your Farmland
Posted: Jul 16, 2020
If you have a farm site and growing crops is your only or major source of income, it is also essential to invest in its maintenance. The upkeep of a farmland while also taking measures to get a good yield of crops can be physically exhausting. However, with some planning and use of right equipment including cattle panels, you can make this easier.
Here’s how to go about it:
Plant a cover crop – Cover crops are the green manure for your fields. They help to suppress weeds, control pests and revive the fertility of soil. They also prevent soil erosion. You can even keep unused pastures fertile by planting cover crops because their key role is to protect and enrich the land.
Once the leaves and stems of cover crops have dried, you can turn them over with a tiller. After a gap of two to three weeks the soil becomes ready for new crops.
Maintain the structures on your farm – You may have small houses to keep your farming equipment and/or to shelter your farm animals. It is essential to maintain them in best of conditions. Leaking roofs can damage the equipment stored inside buildings and moss or fungi in your animals’ homes can affect their health.
Therefore, do not forget to check these structures thoroughly from time to time. If you notice or any crannies or mould build-ups make amends before they become worse. It is advisable to keep a box of tools at the farm site as you will be able to fix many things on your own.
While buying equipment for cattle yards in Sydney and other Australian cities, trust only the certified and licensed suppliers. Inspect the quality of equipment and get all queries on its durability resolved.
Revisit your farming plans - Every now and then, check the goals that you had outlined for your farming activities. At times sudden change of weather or other unforeseen circumstances may result in big setbacks and impede your progress. Therefore, revisit those plans and make adjustments whenever natural factors stop you from achieving a goal.
If one crop fails, there can be many more that you will be able to plant as per the climatic conditions. And if your long-term goals have changed, just sit down for a while to chalk an entirely new strategy before you begin investing in resources.
Summarily, farming is a manual job and the best maintenance of any farm site happens when you are able to take care of the soil that nurtures crops. The soil must have adequate moisture and oxygen to nourish the plants. You should also add manure and fertilizer in the right quantities. Chemical fertilizers can be damaging if they are added in excess of recommended amount.
Then comes the care of the equipment that you use for work – from tractors and tillers to handheld tools and the fences that surround your farm, it is essential to keep everything in the best of conditions.
Spend some time for maintenance and you will get better results even from a job that is primarily controlled by nature.
