Whether you’re styling a home, corporate office, or a hotel bedroom, every room needs to command an attitude. You can fill it with as many vintage knick knacks or modern furnishings as you want, but the atmosphere of a room begins with its walls.

With a seemingly endless amount of colors and patterns available, the first step is to figure out what kind of wallpaper you need, and this can be broken down into two categories: Residential wallpaper and commercial wallcoverings.

Residential Wallpaper

Simply put, residential wallpaper is reserved for personal homes and living spaces and can instantly change the feeling of a space, brand new or renovated. You’ll often find this type of wallpaper referred to as "Type I" and is categorized this way because of its construction.

Smaller and Thinner for Easy Installation

Residential wallpaper is produced to be thinner than commercial wallcoverings making it much lighter and easier to work with. It’s also cut into smaller increments, around the 21" mark, making it easier to apply in troublesome areas like closets and narrow hallways. These smaller cuts also give you more freedom if you want to mix and match colors and patterns to create a more unique look.

Low traffic areas benefit greatly from using residential wallpaper and help add some pop to your home. Try looking for collections from Koroseal and Magnolia Home Wallpaper by Joanna Gaines for a selection of beautiful designs to decorate your home.

Commercial Wallcovering

On the opposite side of the spectrum, commercial wallcoverings are designated predominately for public spaces and fall under the category of "Type II" wallpapers. Some of the most notable differences from residential wallpapers are that they’re generally reserved for higher traffic areas like corporate offices, hotels and retail stores. They’re produced to be thicker and more durable to withstand the wear and tear that comes with time and contact with large numbers of people.

Long Lasting Abrasion and Water Resistance

Thick vinyl cut wallcoverings also tolerate the aggressiveness of harsh chemicals like cleaning products without losing physical and visual integrity. The application of commercial wallcoverings is also easier for large jobs as it’s available in much larger cuts than residential wallpaper keeping both time and costs down.

Enhanced Safety Fire Repellency

The thicker construction also adheres to many building fire codes which require Class A rated wallcoverings. In the event of a fire, wallcoverings classified as such will perform better at slowing the spread of fire and smoke. But these technical advantages don’t mean you have to cash in style for functionality.

There are still many sleek and elegant designs available to keep places of business trendy and stylish. Look for brands like Seabrook and Lanark for a large selection of commercially rated designs.

With residential wallpaper and commercial wallcoverings, it's easy to enhance the ambiance of a new or old room and create a more comforting and productive environment. Your child’s first bedroom or your luxury downtown office, can be made more inviting just by adding some pizzaz to your walls.
