This harsh truth was published in a report by UNICEF which was mainly based on adolescents Alphabetically first among the causes of stress on students is academic pressure.
Social polls demonstrate that students perceive the exams as a "duel of questions and answers", as a "severe torture" as "intellectual and emotional overload" which hampers not only the academic perfonnance of the students but exert the negative impact on the student’s personality and their outlook for the life also.As educational factors get more stringent in all levels of education, students everywhere experience considerable school stress. A number of suicides committed by students have been reported in the National Dailies after the declaration of Board Examination result.
A recent survey conducted in Delhi under ‘Social mental health program’ has found that 70% students appearing for the board examination are under stress and anxiety.
A concern has been expressed about the stress and suicidal cases at the national level. The examination stress occurs mainly in three stages.
In the first place, it is the school examination/ pre board examination which cause an anxiety among the young minds. Some students have discovered other mechanisms to deal with the examination stress and pressure, like running away from home or simply refusing to appear for exams. College exams are also one of the most integral parts of this phase, which brings in a lot of stress in students.
The second biggest cause of anxiety and suicidal tendencies is the public examination conducted by various Education Boards. The failure rate in most of these boards ranges from 40% to 60%. Today, there are 40 boards in the country and these conduct examinations starting from the primary stage till senior secondary stages. The third reason for the stress and anxiety is the Entrance Examination for admission to professional courses conducted by IITs, Engineering and Medical colleges.
Besides this, the pressure from the parents, peer group and society is also responsible for stress and exam-fever.
As a student or reader it is important to know and explore these sources in detail.
Lack of preparation and planning is the most important factor that is responsible for exam stress. It is generally observed that students start their preparation for exams as soon as they get their Date sheet for the exam. At that time thoughts like
Most parents dream only their child should do a Himalayan jobs in all the exams. However, all students are not equally talented nor they have high motivation for studies. All students do not possess adequate learning skills or time management skills, such things limit their ability to perform well in the exam. Further, it is important to understand that there is an intra-individual difference between the child himself, i.e. The child is not equally talented in all the subjects or courses. Do remember that parental expectations can lead to stress for some students as they might strive to match up to their parents’ expectation in spite of limited capacities.
There is cut throat competition these days amongst students in getting admission to various courses when it comes to their academic performance. It imposes a lot of pressure that leads to stress, especially in mediocre students as they associate it mostly with the fear of rejection.Competition during and after the exams is getting high and high every day. As students are not much aware about the various unconventional and upcoming fields of study, they all jumble around the limited conventional courses and start competing each other in the race of getting admission to a course.
All five fingers are not same, and so are we humans. Most students choose the course of study as per their grades, peer pressure and guidance given by the elders. Most of cases students do not have a freedom to choose their loveable subject. So in many cases where students choose a course work really hard, but are unable to get good grades just because it’s not the right field for them as per their abilities and this leads to immense stress in students.
