8 Disadvantages of a Nursing Home

Posted: Aug 29, 2014
When an elderly is going to be moved from his home to a nursing home, he faces a very stressful and difficult time of his life. While some family members may think sending him in a nursing home will be the best for him, it is actually not true. The truth is, this move will only make the elderly to feel helpless, lonely and hurt. In these places, they will not be allowed to do some things that they love to do. You are taking them from the place that they are very familiar with, their home and move to a strange place where they do not even know anybody. This could worsen their medical conditions considering the emotional state that they are in.
Other disadvantages include:
- Depression - Most often, these people would tend to decrease their activity and motivation to move, socialize and be active because of depression. You made him leave the place he has known all his life. All memories also gone, that is what is more depressing for them.
- Many people believe that when you enter nursing homes, it means you are just waiting to die. This could probably be true because when you leave your home and move to a strange place, you could suffer from depression that your condition worsens which could lead to death.
- Along with the depression is the loneliness. For many elderly no longer gets visited by family member and friends.
- Most often than not, they are no longer allowed to do certain things which make them feel they have lost their freedom. And with this lost freedom, all they do is a boring scheduled daily activity.
- Freedom is no longer around. You cannot choose what you want to eat, you cannot buy your own groceries, you can watch TV anytime, you cannot take a bathe anytime you want to and your laundry will be done along with the others’ laundry. Everything you do is based on schedule and not based when you want to.
- They are no longer allowed to attend church but the service that the home provides.
- They are no longer treated by their own doctor. The nursing home’s resident doctor is the one treating all of them. They will feel remorse for their children for making them stay in these homes.
