The management of solid waste represents a major economic and environmental issue throughout the world. The municipal solid waste recycling, which involves the reprocessing of materials into new products, is important for environmental preservation and wellbeing of the society. At the same time, it prevents useful material resources being wasted, reduces the consumption of raw materials and energy usage, and in turn reduces the greenhouse gas emissions. It is important to note that in order to be applicable, the municipal solid waste management solutions need to be financially sustainable, technically feasible, socially and legally acceptable, and most importantly – environment friendly.

In last few decades, continuous efforts in research and policy-making by the municipal administration have led to improvements, and have helped the world moved towards a more sustainable municipal solid waste recycling.

The important aspects to be taken care of while planning sustainable waste management include the following steps:

  • waste collection at source
  • waste segregation into different components
  • storage

Collection of waste is usually done by going door-to-door, from roadside bins, and other common collection points. The local government bodies such as the municipality are responsible for waste collection. In some countries, roadside bins are categorised into biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste.

Municipal Solid Waste Sorting

When it comes to recycling of waste, waste segregation is the most important consideration to be taken care of. Responsibility of waste segregation lies with individual citizens, as well as with the staff appointed for waste collection and segregation. Segregation of metal, plastic, papers, and biowastes not only provides economic advantage due to recycling but also saves money and efforts for their further treatment or disposal. Public awareness is most important for proper waste segregation.Sorting waste at the source itself helps make the process simpler and helps promote recycling and circular economy.

However, the rising costs of waste disposal are creating cost competitive opportunities for recycling. Recycling if done using the right equipment, therefore, may cost less than disposal. The goals for a recycling program must be carefully matched to capital and operating costs to ensure that the program is successful and sustainable. A review on waste sorting has underlined that suitable infrastructure, less distance to collection point, and engagement with public are key for a successful sorting system.

A crucial prerequisite for recycling is sorting of useful materials from source-separated MSW. This can be done in two ways:

  1. Manual Waste Sorting
  2. Automated Waste Sorting

Researchers have been exploring automated sorting techniques to improve the overall efficiency of recycling process. The automated municipal solid waste sorting equipment makes use of a variety of sorting techniques based on the separation rate of organic matter, plastics, metals, paper, etc to improve the garbage recycling rate.

The following steps are followed in the automated sorting process:

  1. The forklift transports the rubbish to the feeding platform, and the hopper takes away the rubbish.
  2. The garbage gets evenly distributed by the feeder, and is then sent to next process by the belt conveyor.
  3. Workers pick out the large waste (large plastic material, cans, wood, PET bottles, etc.) when the garbage goes through the manual sorting platform.
  4. The rubbish is separated by rotating screening machine, and sorted into two types based on their size. These materials are mainly classified into the PET bottles, plastic, cloth, metal, etc. The waste metal is picked out by strong magnetic separation machine.
  5. The waste which cannot be recycled is baled and sent to landfills or to get crushed.
  6. The whole MSW sorting system takes advantage of several advanced sorting methods and require very little manpower to operate. The sorting rate is high and time taken through automatic sorting is less.

The success of any machine designed for solid waste segregation depends mainly on the public awareness and the active participation of such waste generators in the different communities. Educating communities on the benefits of optimum utilization of resources and recycling can go a long way in help the municipality of any city to function better.
