Contemplating whether to join the school of engineers?

Engineering is one of the most common and lucrative STEM fields. You most likely know a lot of people who are majoring in or planning to major in a certain engineering field. But what types of engineering can you choose from? And how do they differ from one another?

In this article, we will take a closer look at the types of degrees in engineering available, as well as the job specifications you could get with that degree.

Who is an Engineer?

An engineer is a professional who practices the application of science to design, build, test and analyze structures, machines, materials, processes, systems and organizations. The Engineering field is a vast area of study that can be divided into several disciplines, that are:

Mechanical Engineering

It is a field of engineering that focuses on engineering principles for designing, constructing and operating mechanical systems and devices. Mechanical Engineers get employment opportunities in energy, automotive and operating industries. They routinely utilize computers and technology to create, test-run machines and generate specifications for the parts.

Electrical Engineering

It is a field of engineering that focuses on the study and the application of different components of devices and systems. Their skills are widely needed in several industries. They perform supervision on pieces of equipment and perform test runs to make sure it is properly functioning.

Civil Engineering

It is a field of engineering that focuses on the design, construction, and maintenance of public and private infrastructural operations such as bridges, roads, and railways. Civil Engineers evaluate the project developments according to its construction costs, regulatory rules as well as potential effects on the environment.

Chemical Engineering

It is the discipline of engineering that deals with the principles of chemistry, physics, mathematics, and economics in order to convert raw materials and energy into useful products as well as efficiently operating plants and equipment. Chemical Engineers are also referred to as process engineers. They are posted in refineries, industrial plants, and operational offices.

Computer Engineering

It is a field of engineering that focuses on combining the fields of electronics and computer science in order to develop computer hardware. Their work also involves making computer systems work and incorporating it into larger systems as well. Computer Engineers are of two forms; hardware and software engineers. Computer Hardware Engineers are professionals who test, operate and install computer hardware. In contrast, Computer Software Engineers are professionals who are responsible for designing and creating new software.

Aeronautical Engineering

It is a discipline of engineering that is concerned with the research, design, and manufacturing of aircraft and spacecraft. Aeronautical Engineers often specialize in one of two engineering types; aeronautical or astronautical. Aeronautical Engineers work on the practice of aircraft within the earth’s atmosphere while Astronautical Engineers test on the performance of flight in and outside of earth’s atmosphere.
