The global space economy has been growing at a rapid pace owing to the increasing requirement of satellite-based connectivity services across different applications such as communication, navigation, Earth observation and others. The global space economy was worth more than $400 billion in 2018, out of which, 76% was generated through services such as earth observation, telecommunication, remote sensing, satellite TV, GNSS equipment, satellite systems, and others. This burgeoning growth in the overall space industry is driving the growth of ground stations which offer satellite connectivity.

There has been an emergence of market players that are employing new business models in space ground stations. Companies such as Amazon, Infostellar, Copernicus Space and BridgeSat, have entirely transformed the way ground station business was perceived in earlier times. For instance, in May 2018, Amazon initiated ground station-as-a-service model wherein, it allows its users to download the information from multiple satellites. In this way, the company is promising to provide an easier and cost-effective experience to attain analyzed and integrated data from AWS platform. Similarly, BridgeSat is revolutionizing the ground station industry by offering laser terminals over traditional radio frequency-driven ground terminals. According to BridgeSat, these ground stations are cheap and can be operated with better performance as compared to traditional terminals. BridgeSat has acquired multiple contracts from satellite operators to develop laser ground stations. For instance, in May 2018, the company received a contract from ICEYE, to develop low-cost and innovative terminals. Japan-based company named Infostellar is also designing a cloud-based platform which will allow the user to share the antennas at various ground stations, described as Airbnb for satellites. Such advancements in the technologies are expected to drive huge growth in the global space ground station equipment market.

With the huge growth in the small satellites, there has been emergence of new companies which are investing in the development of ground station network for small satellites. For instance, Leaf Space, an Italy-based company founded in 2014 has four operational ground stations in Lithuania, Italy, Ireland and Spain as of November 2019, and is planning to expand it further to 20 ground stations by late 2020. These stations are expected to cater to microsatellites in LEO. Similarly, Copernicus Space, an Australia-based start up founded in 2018 is establishing ground station network which will cater to small satellites in LEO and MEO. Not only new startups, but established companies are also focusing to develop ground station infrastructure for small satellites.
