The telecom regulatory authority of India provides many telecom related licenses to those who want to use telecom resources for their businesses. The most popular among them is the TRAI License or Telemarketing license. Telemarketers who want to leverage telecom resources like telephone, fax or internet, to conduct the following kinds of activities are required to get telemarketing registration / telemarketing license:

What is Telemarketing registration?

Before we dive into the process of telemarketing registration, let’s understand what it does to your business. Once you get the TRAI registration for telemarketing, your business name would enter inside the National telemarketing Register. That register will entail the following details about your business:

1. Details regarding your telemarketing agency: It would contain the information like:

a. Date on which you acquire Telemarketing registration.

b. The application number that helped you acquire Telemarketing registration.

c. The registration number.

  1. Fee details: The entry fee and other deposits you’ve submitted to TRAI.
  2. Resource Details: Telemarketing resources that are allocated to you.
  3. Notices: In case you have acquired notices in response to conducting unsolicited operations, the information about those notices would be put in telemarketing registry.
  4. Blacklisting details: If you’re blacklisted, your details as a telemarketer won’t be removed from the registry, but it would marked as blacklisted.
  5. Auxiliary details: If you’ve been sent other notices or communications, or have changed the infrastructure of your telemarketing agency in some way, the information regarding those will be put in the telemarketing registry.

The process of telemarketing registration

Now that you know what you’re in for once you obtain the authorization to become a telemarketer, let’s discuss it’s process:

  1. Go to the telemarketing registration portal: The process to become a telemarketer is conducted online and offline. Thus, first you to go to the portal and click on the new telemarketing registration link.
  2. Fill the application form: Once you click the link, you’d be directed to the application. Fill the application with your precise details and specify the document you’re going to attach:

a. Certificate of incorporation of your company.

b. Memorandum of Association of your company.

c. Telecom resources agreement with the service provider

d. and other documents that your DOT consultant suggests.

Once you’ve filled the application form, submit it and print it out.

  1. Pay the required fee: Pay the required fee (5,000) for telemarketing registration via the Bharatkosh. That amount of non-refundable. Also submit the refundable security deposit of INR 50,000/-. Print out a receipt for that too.
  2. Submit the documents offline: Once you’ve submitted the application and the paid the fee, all that remains is informing TRAI that you’ve filed the application. And for that, you have to - either by speed post or by physically visiting – submit the hard copies of the application, the documents and the receipts to the TRAI branch.
  3. The application is then processed: The TRAI would then initiate the processing of your application. Once it’s done, it can either accept or reject it depending on how correctly you’ve filled the application and how authentic your documents are.

If the application is accepted, you will receive the certificate of registration and at the same time, your company’s name would enter in the New Telemarketing Registry.

The validity of telemarketing license

The TRAI telemarketing license is valid for up to 5 years. Once that period is over, you can renew it for 5 years more.
