Factors to consider in product design
Product design refers to creating a new product that can be sold to customers. It is a broad concept that includes the generation of innovative design ideas and the creation of the product. It is the task of product design experts to turn ideas into tangible products. Product designers create innovative products that cater to customer demands and are different from products offered by rival companies.
Product design refers to both physical appearance and functionality of a product. However, there are certain factors that designers must keep in mind while designing products:
1. Price, Appearance and Prestige ValueIf the product is not attractive, then it cannot attract a large number of customers. Since the market is encompassed by cutthroat competition, there are substitutes of every product available at different stores. In such a scenario, it becomes mandatory for a brand to present its products in such a way that it attracts maximum potential customers.
Furthermore, an attractive-looking product must be reasonably priced so as to fit the budget of a common man. The market is affected by various factors and pricing is at the top. Moreover, product designers must ensure that the price at which they are willing to sell a product is worth its functionality & design.
2. MaintenanceRegular maintenance is required to ensure better functioning of a product. A product functions optimally if all its parts function properly. At times, for the better functioning of the product, manufacturer and product designers go for re-designing. In the process of re-designing, they focus on a few parts and not the entire product, which saves them from changing the entire production process. In fact, the maintenance workers don’t have to disassemble the entire product in case of re-designing, which indeed saves their time and effort during the repairing process.
3. Economic ViabilityIn the market, a maximum number of customers purchase products which are low priced. So, the designers and manufacturers must ensure that they create products with minimum production cost while meeting customers’ demands. They must also provide top-notch quality products so that the customers come back for more.
4. FunctionalityIt doesn’t matter how appealing or cost-effective a product is. If it doesn’t function well & serve its purpose properly, no one will purchase it. One cannot attract potential customers merely by offering a product at a low cost or with great packing. The customers value the functionality of the product more than its appearance. So, the designers must pay heed to both the aesthetics and functionality of the product.
