Grant Writing - How to clearly define your need
Posted: Oct 01, 2020
When grant writing for your not for profit sporting or community group, you must first clearly define the specific problem you have identified in your area of interest or community. You must have designed a program that will address the problem. You will then need describe the solution you have devised in detail for the funding body. The goal is to secure funding to address the problem.
Agree on the Problem
For a grant proposal to receive funding, the funding body must be confident that awarding your program funding, will have a positive effect on your community. To do this, you need to identify a problem or issue within your community that can be improved or changed with funding.
Involve All Stakeholders
A successful grant proposal will involve all of the stakeholders. A stakeholder being anyone who is affected by or has an interest in your project. Be sure to invite involvement from the organisations that you already partner with as well as considering forming new relationships with groups who are like-minded. A diverse group is preferable to funding bodies as levels of participation will ebb and wane among partners. Hold a meeting involving all the stakeholders but be prepared for disagreement among them. Your goal is to try and reach a consensus of opinion. If your group is larger than a handful of people, consider bringing in professional facilitation. This is also a great option if you are not sure of your capacity to manage disputes between groups.
Define the Problem
Make sure you involve stakeholders in every step of developing a clear and concise description of the problem. It may be necessary to hold more than one meeting to arrive at a consensus that will satisfy most of the stakeholders. Putting in the effort will be worth it in the end. Once the problem is agreed upon, the rest of the work will flow more smoothly. When it comes to describing the problem, avoid terms like "outrageous" or "ugly". Ensure you use the most current and relevant information available to you.
Describe the Impact of the Problem and Possible Causes of the Problem
Use the same clear and objective language to detail the problem's impact socially and economically. Even if the cause of the problem is obvious to you, get agreement from as many stakeholders as you can on the cause. The amount of detail you will be required to present to the funding body will vary. Even if there is strong agreement on the cause of the problem, the funding body may still need an investigation. When describing the problem, its impact and cause, avoid jargon and technical terms wherever possible. The funding body and all stakeholders should thoroughly understand what is being said.
