The spun-lacing method, also known as the hydroentanglement method, is a mechanical bonding process that entangles the yarn and fibers to form a "web" with added strength. The fibers or filament will go through mechanical, thermal, sticky, or chemical processes to create a web structure. Other methods developed to suffice product market demand.

  • jet- entangled
  • water entangled
  • hydro entangled
  • hydraulic needle entangled

Spunlace nonwoven fabric technology is nonfabric spinning or weaving. Unlike the traditional textile woven fabric principle, spunlace nonwoven has a short process, with fast production speed, low cost, and high yield products. China is known to be the dominant producer and supplier of spunlace nonwoven fabrics, medical and non-medical.

On the finishing process of spunlace, it will undergo diverse methods depending on clients' needs. The main finishing is dying or printing. In other non-medical cases, like spunlace nonwoven cloth wallpaper, fire retardant application produces fire-resistant spunlace fabric. The largest industrial produce for spunlace nonwoven fabrics is the raw material for wet wipes products. Some have higher antimicrobial agents to spunlace nonwoven fabric to intensify resistance from microorganisms. Here are the parameters that set differences to the spunlace nonwoven features:

1. Fiber material.

  • Fiber characteristics like low bending entangle more easily than fibers with a high bend. Cotton and polyester fabric are some of the raw materials for spunlace nonwoven.
  • 1.8-2.4 cm length of fiber delivers the most reliable result. The fiber piece is instantly proportional to the tie point or entangle areas & inversely proportionate to the fabric durability.

2. Process of web forming. It is the method used to create spunlace nonwoven fiber.

  • Carding. Fibers with the same blending characteristics become a sheet-like state by passing through multiple metal rolls. The sheet-like condition is called the "web."
  • Bonding. From carding, the web fibers are not yet bonded. The high-pressure water jets are applied to this web to connect the threads, turning it into a strong sheet.
  • Drying. The wet sheets are dried out and enter a conveyor to perform fusion bonding for the sheath-core structure
  • Inspection. An inspection machine is used to rigidly checked the nonwoven fabric after the drying process
  • Winding. Inspected sheets are wounded to big or small roll, depending on contact clients' needs.

3. Water jet.

Hole diameters range from.08 to.25 and.12 to.18

  • Density 10-30 jets/cm
  • Jet Diameter 80 - 800 mm
  • Water Jet Velocity 10 - 350 m/sec
  • Water Jet Pressure 2200 psi

4. Water. It should not contain any microorganisms. The pH level should be neutral.

Detailed Spunlace Process

The high-pressure jet of water does the entanglement of the fibers in the web. The jets fade out most of the kinetic energy. The fibers are entangled, and during the bounce back against the substrates, disseminating energy to the threads. A water vacuum is used inside the roll to reduce the use of water from the process. Jet adjustments move the fibers and cause significant web forming.

The hydroentanglement is useful on both sides in a stepwise strategy. The initial entanglement on the first side will roll depending on the number of times needed to impart web design and fabric strength. The following entanglement process will proceed in an overturn direction to treat and merge the other side of the fabric. The finished spunlace fabric will go to the drying process, where surplus water is removed.
