Manufacturing process

You must have heard of the Bessemer process also known as Bessemerization. What began in 1856 is continued as modern-day steel production and is the first procedure used to manufacture steel on a mass scale. The system essentially involves removing iron impurities by a blast of air. Further enhancements of this process resulted in using this technique to eliminate impurities while retaining the carbon content.

There are two ways to produce cost-effective high-quality steel. One is the Basic Oxygen Process (BOP) which involves putting a combination of raw iron ore and steel scrap metal in small quantities into a blast furnace. As the name suggests, pure oxygen is blown into the furnace which increases its temperature and melts the scrap metal. The iron ore’s impurities are also simultaneously oxidized and the carbon content is reduced to its ideal ratio.

While the above process results in liquid steel, another method called the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) is used to produce larger quantities of pure steel. High electric currents from electrodes are let in to melt the steel scraps. Simultaneously, ferroalloys (chromium, nickel, etc.) are added until the liquid steel reaches its desired ratio. This gives us stainless steel which is purified by blasts of oxygen and additions of fluorspar and lime.

The steel’s impurities combined with these substances turn to slag, which floats to the top of the molten steel. This is removed and pure steel is procured. These EAF furnaces are ideal for large scale steel production, as their capacity allows them to produce nearly 150 tonnes of steel per melt in just 90 minutes.
