The Deeper Meaning of Mantra Pushpam
Posted: Nov 10, 2020
Mantra Pushpam is a Vedic prayer. It appears in the Taittiriya Aranyaka part of the Krishna Yajurveda and is recited in temples towards the end of a Pooja, and it is also chanted in pious Hindu homes daily or when special Poojas are performed. Often flowers are offered to the gods at this time. The verses talk about the origin and evolution of natural forces. These include air, fire, water, earth, Sun, Moon, stars, etc. It is not mere praise of God
This great mantra comes from Taithreeya Aranyakam (1.22) of Yajur Veda. It is a very famous Veda mantra and is quite popular. It is usually sung in a chorus by all the priests after performing Pooja or Yajna.
The mantra comes under Aaranyakas or forest treaties. These Vedas are learned in forest areas, traditionally. The mantra explains the truths of creation. The origin or source of all elements in the universe, like space, air, fire, water, and earth is Atman itself. It also dwells on the cause and effect relationship between water and the other elements and heavenly bodies. Thus, it explains that all these elements are interconnected. This is something that the native American leader Chief Seattle as well as Greek philosophers like Thale have articulated.
The meaning of Mantra Pushpam is as follows: The world is made of water and is the basis of everything. It is worthy of our prayers. As water is cool, the moon is also cool, like a flower of the water. One who understands this attains all prosperity including progeny and cattle. Fire also produces water, and the air produces fire. As sea water rises as vapor to the clouds and becomes rain to give us warmth and prosperity, the Sun is related to water. Stars, due to their astrological position, determine rain and prosperity, and through water we can see the relation of stars for this prosperity. Every year, we get the rainy season, which brings us rains, and the year around seasons gain importance. The world revolves on this water, like a boat sailing in the ocean, and one who understands this prospers.
The basic message of the mantra is that water forms the basis of this universe. But it has a deeper spiritual meaning.
Mantra Pushpam expresses a deep understanding of nature and its elements. It reveals the interconnectedness of all of creation. The sublime interrelationship between all the elements and entities like the sun, the moon, stars, clouds, and rains sustains life and maintains the continuous flow of life energy or Prana. Once we become aware of this, we will be able to understand ourselves, our place in the universe, and our life purpose. This understanding brings everlasting peace.
This sacred interconnectedness of everything in the universe was known to the wise sages of India and also tribal people throughout the world as they lived in close proximity and alignment with nature.
While the ‘Purusha Suktam
- traces the journey from the Highest Pedestal to our present level of existence, Mantra Pushpam takes us back to the Realm of the Supreme. The former describes how the Omnipresent Omniscient ‘Purusha’, transformed into all the things that make up the universe, and the latter describes the process in reverse - how the individual, through the universe, can walk the path that leads back to the Supreme Principle Our final purpose is to reach a Transcendental State of Supreme Bliss, by merging with the Supreme Consciousness.
Thus, the inner deeper meaning of ‘Mantra Pushpam’ is that the human mind is humbly submitted to the All-Pervading Supreme Consciousness through this mantra.
