Overview of 2020 Honda Jazz

The small car with the leftmost left brain has returned. This is the fourth generation, and there are no spoilers to say it's amazingly roomy, versatile, easy to get in and out of and economical. If the predecessor is reliable, it is very reliable too. It just makes sense to retire at the final paycheck that many owners seem to have.

But just to mix things up a bit, the new one has an all-new hybrid powertrain throughout the lineup. What makes the range seem narrow: one engine, one power output, one transmission.

The single curveball is an optional trim called the Crosstar. Mad Macadam? This is an elevated suspension version, with minimal plastic cladding to the underbody, roof rails, and waterproof upholstery. Practical, no doubt, for taking your surfboard down rocky trails to secluded beaches. Just as the owner wanted.

Jazz body is slightly longer than before, but still not as big as a supermini. Which makes space even more magical. This is done by having you sit up straight, like an MPV. The fuel tank is on as is usually done on the Jazz, under the front seat, which frees up empty space under the rear cushions. You can take advantage of this by swinging the pillow upwards.

The dashboard shows, if you tighten your eyes, a bit of the Honda e influence: an unadorned rectangle with fine textured padding.

In previous Jazz music, the front pillar was thick, making it difficult to see. This time, the main collision structure is on the second pillar behind, so the front pillars are thinner and block your view less. So why don't they move the base of the windshield backwards?

That hybrid. Honda had previously been here, thanks to something called the NSX. But the way it works is very different. It's also different from the Jazz hybrid IMA of the two previous generations.

The same idea as the CR-V hybrid. Like a diesel electric train, in principle: generator drive engine, generator drive motor, wheel drive motor. But while a train is at full throttle or cruising flat, the car has extra adjustments to handle many different circumstances.

So the hybrid battery absorbs power when the engine has spare, so the engine (Atkinson cycle, non-turbo, 1.5 liter) can be moved to a load-rev point where fuel efficiency is more or less optimal. For short flat bursts, the drive motor draws a little extra from the battery.

Finally, there is a lock-up clutch between the engine and wheels, for direct drive at road speeds. It adds a little to the overall efficiency by avoiding the trip of electric power to the houses. Apart from that, there is no gearbox, or CVT in the conventional sense.

When it comes to fuel economy, the hybrid system will definitely play a role. Even if you do a lot of things on the highway where hybrids usually crash, you will find that the speed is 50mpg. In a single highway or city, the WLTP number 62mpg can be used.

It keeps you safe. The high-strength steel body coating is part of the safety auxiliary device, which has been the standard configuration since the basic model. These include vehicle, pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane centering, cruise radar, roadside sensing and LED headlights.

In addition, there are 10 airbags, one of which appears between the driver and passengers to prevent collisions with each other in a side collision.

If you can drive 90,000 miles in three years, you will only spend the warranty.

The cheapest SE sells for less than £19,000. For a super mini car, enough; for a super spacious car with full hybrid power, not much. If you deposit £4,417, the SE will be launched with PCP for three years and £199 per month.

The two-tone Crosstar is only available in the top specifications, at a price of £23,850.

You can literally recommend Jazz confidently to friends or family members who are not interested in cars. They will not love you for doing so, but in the next three years, they will still like you very much.

But do you want it yourself? Probably not. No matter how useful and reliable they are, their simple appearance and dull power move us towards another group of smart and fun supermen.
