Importance of Air Filtration in Hospitals

Hospitals are often situated in crowded and polluted areas where preventing smoke, dust and other hydrocarbons, is not a feasible option. Thus, an effective air filtration system in hospitals is highly important, particularly in sections like paediatric's ward and cancer centers. Another important reason for hospitals to connect effective air filtration systems is that they are always surrounded by car parks and utilize a high-powered generator for backup power.

The fumes emitted by the diesel engine are then drawn into the hospital via air handlers. People in certain areas of hospital might be exposed to unacceptable air quality because of odiferous and toxic compounds from various sources. Factors that can contribute to bad odor and contamination of air in hospitals include ambient traffic, evaporative materials, construction at hospitals, volatile organic compounds present in construction materials, and emissions from diesel vehicles.

The facility staff in most of the hospitals complain that they have to turn off the air intake when diesel generators are activated. This can be very dangerous for the patients suffering from claustrophobia. Therefore, the use of air processing equipment and filters at the hospital is the best alternative. The air filters are specifically installed right next to the exhaust of the diesel generator,so that the pollutants that emanate from the generator can be easily propelled outside the building. There are two major categories of hydrocarbons commonly found in hospitals.

First category includes semi-volatile organic compounds and the products of their incomplete combustion from the diesel and gasoline range. Second category includes plasticizers and solvents present in construction material and cleaning compounds. When organic compounds agglomerate in complex ways they lead to bad odor. These compounds are present in the air in the form of droplets or particles that cannot be captured easily due to surface tension of the aerosolized pollutant.

This is why regular air filters are not sufficient to eliminate the stink. However, an effective air filtration system can breach the microcellular membrane of aerosol and reduce the level of odor, even when both air-handler and diesel generator are in use. It is interesting to note that an efficient air filtration system has the potential to permanently capture and immobilize organic aerosols at extremely low pressures.

Conversely, conventional air filters often re-entrain the intercepted aerosols, because of which more powerful droplets come out from the other end. It also offers excellent protection from airborne maladies. There are special filters that are installed at the ceiling of operation theatres using latest technology for the new challenges in surgery. The health care facilities and future needs of hospitals are always kept mind when these systems are designed.

Low energy designs are also available in the market these days, thanks to the use of energy-efficient filtration and high efficiency fans. These designs have reduced the need for fresh air supply because the re-circulated air is filtered effectively. Another great thing about these systems is that their installation is cost is very less. Moreover, they are easy to maintain and have long service life.
