All You Need to Know About Portugal Citizenship

The passport of Portugal is ranked at 6th position among the strongest passports in the globe. Portugal’s passport allows its holders to have visa-free access to more than 172 countries. Portuguese passport holders get the right to legally study, live, and work in any of the country in the EU.

In the year 2012, Portugal’s government made some changes in its immigration law, thus allowing non-EU citizens to acquire temporary residence at EU for upto five years in exchange for them making investments in real estate industry of Portugal. These new regulations offer the non-EU citizens, a fast and simple way for the property investors to get 5-year residence permit. This offer is popularly known as the Golden Visa Scheme.

Upon acquiring real estate of a value greater than €500,000, the Golden residence permit of Portugal will be temporarily issued for a period of 1 year initially. It can then be subsequently renewed for another couple of consecutive periods of 2 years, which makes a total of 5 years. After this 5 year has duly elapsed, the permit holder may choose to apply for permanent permit for residency. Portugal passport Goa citizens are eligible to apply too.

In accordance with the Portuguese Nationality Law, the Government of Portugal grants Portuguese citizenship to foreigner through naturalization. The person needs to fulfill the basic requirement to be resident in the Portuguese territory legally for atleast 5 years.

Timeline

  • Week 1-2. The first step is signing the CI retainer agreement and make the first payment for CI professional fees. The client is eligible to select the property in Portuguese remotely too and the CI will start preparing the purchase documentation for that property, as required to be duly presented for the residency application.
  • Week 2-4. During this period, the client needs to travel to Portugal in order to get his/her passport stamped before the residency application is stamped. In case the client doesn’t have the Schengen Visa, then he/she must make an application for a Portuguese Tourist Visa at the Portugal’s consulate at the client’s home country.

The client will travel to Portugal on Tourist/Schengen visa, in order to obtain the passport stamp done and to visit the immigration department. Client can visit the property, and alternatively, he/she can transfer the capital directly to his newly-opened Portuguese bank account.

  • Month 3. The purchase of property is executed by the CI lawyers, suggests an expert
Goa Portugal citizenship. Residence permit’s documents is duly submitted to the Government authorities, and it needs to include the title deed for the property. At this point of time, application fees for government processing becomes payable.

  • Month 4. Upon arriving, a meeting with the Government authorities will be scheduled. At this point of time, the permit fees for residency becomes payable. The final professional fees for CI is paid. The Client is eligible to travel Portugal in order to collect his/her residency permit. Alternatively though, CI lawyers can also collect the permit on behalf of the client. Residence permit is usually issued within 45 days of time.
